It has been said that the term red light district might have originated in pre-Maoist China. Red lanterns were hung so men knew where to find brothels. That's one theory I heard.

i'm not sure how much of a purist you are, but do you think you could edit out that tiny spot of red on the right side? i personally find it a bit distracting. like, my eye wants to follow the trail of lanterns, but then it sees that and keeps jumping over to it. so instead of the smooth, flowing movement the picture calls for, instead you get this jittery "what's that over there?" feel.
but, all in all, lovely picture.
