Description My avatar in Second Life, whose name is Amalthea Dionne. ^^ I'm a unicorn! This is my regular human form, but I also have a full on unicorn form (several, actually). The outfit I'm wearing comes from a store called Bare Rose (it's called Earl's Ivory Daughter). It's got quite alot of little details on it, so I had to simplify here and there.

Second Life is hard to describe. :< The best way is to look at it literally - it's a digital life that can mirror your real life (thus, a Second Life). You can be just about anything you want to be (there's a pretty huge furry community, as well as neko people, aliens, animals, robots, vampires, demons, and just about anything else you can think of). There are stores where you can buy clothes, avatars, toys, and again just about anything (you buy things with Linden dollars, or L$, which can be bought or sold for real money, won in contests or playing games, camping, etc). There is a building system where you can manipulate shapes (called Prims) into various objects (It's alot like putting clay shapes together to make something). You can make hair, shoes, skirts, weapons - just about ANYTHING using prims. And if you know how to script you can make them do even more stuff.

There's just so much to Second Life it's hard to put it all in a nutshell. It's fun to explore the various and seemingly infinite worlds that people have created, look at all the shops, and make an avatar that suits you. There are some downsides though, and these are a matter of personal preferance or abilities as to whether they're downsides or not

- It can get very laggy alot of the time.
- If you don't have a really great computer (which I don't) you'll miss out on alot of the special effects in the graphics (and it may of course run slower).
- Naturally, there is alot of sex on SL. There are HUGE fetish groups and lots of stores that cater to them. While it's not 100% IN YOUR FACE, it's not something that will go unnoticed. Alot like real life, really.
- While there are tons of free items available all over, most of the really good stuff costs money. It isn't like other games where you can kill monsters and earn gold or something. The only ways to make money are to buy it with real money (which isn't terrible, it's about 300L for $2 or something and that can get you a few things if you know where to shop), getting a job somewhere (these are incredibly hard to come by - the most common and probably easiest would be a "dancer" in a club), or in more obscure ways such as playing free Zyngo machines and winning (It's a game like bingo. If you get enough points you can win L$) or entering contests (some places hold contests such as costume costests, fighting competitions, building competitions, etc).

So yeah, sorry I talked your ear off about it. DX They best way to find out about it would be to try it yourself I guess. If you like roleplaying, furries, building things, shopping, or just about anything you'll probably find something you like about it. Other people hate it. It all depends.

Lolz~~~~~

There is a design studio subject that uses Second life a design process, so im thinking of taking that up next semester cos my friends said it was quite good. RMIT has their own island there and you can look at the past projects on that island. The tutor of that subject gave a lecture last week and it looks really nice XD

hehehe~~ i shall try it for a bit lol. I do like scripting. how does that work in SL?

I have heard of schools using SL to teach and do projects.

I really don't know much about scripting... I think it uses C language or something. x_x What I DO know is that if you want to make just about anything cool, you NEED scripts. They do everything from animating avatars to changing an objects texture to playing sounds and beyond.

I leave it to my friends who know scripting. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
