Description
Artist Statement for series.“Now is a time to withdraw voluntarily from the world to seek truth in solitude. You must reunite with the Source. You need to rest and think silently about your situation. Meditation, patient contemplation, and calm reflection are in order. This is a time of patient waiting and keeping to yourself. Sometimes counseling will aid in your search for self-understanding. Take time to consider matters carefully. Be patient as you strive to make a prudent decision. Most likely the answer lies within, but if you are feeling stuck seek sensible advice from a wise and more experienced person. This is also a good time to take up the serious study of a subject that interests you.”
A common tarot definition of the Hermit has been extended and formed itself as a general description of my life. There is a constant battle between the need to be by myself, and the overbearing feelings of isolation and loneliness. Mainly concentrating on concept, this series of photographs can be interpreted as wished, but to me depict the long, lonely road traveled and yet to be traveled. Drawing inspiration from The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac, and Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush, I intend to give others an opportunity to take a little bit of my feelings with them.
The Hermit itself conjures up many associations, all of which apply in their own ways. The first tarot card I pulled was the Hermit, and this foray into spirituality prompted further explorations in self-empowering tools that could open my eyes to possible new paths. The card is also full with memories of my aunt, Elke, and her old house in Langenhorn (Germany). I remember a noodle dish that tasted so good after all the airplane sickness, the lavender pillow she sewed to help me sleep, and the plastic horses my sister, cousin, and I played with in the garden.
Neil Young is a great artist to listen to while riding a train. There is something about a harmonica and acoustic guitar that invokes visions of freedom. Catching a freight train and riding it out to some unknown destination belongs to those who are free and who shoulder little cares but to remain free. Dharma bums and hobos usually travel their journeys alone, tied down only in the simple survival necessities. Kerouac’s Dharma bums spend their days deep in thought and the occasional revelation, and learn much in solitude, similar to associations of the Hermit. Surrounded by Mother Nature, forgotten and thus free to be, the thinkers are left alone with their minds.
Employing the concepts of form and content and intention, I would like others to feel free to interpret and take away whatever they wish from this project. Most importantly, all I want to do is convey a vibe or, feeling. Years of contemplating myself, all of the whys, have led me down a path unlike many of my peers. Sometimes wandering and wondering days drenched in daydreams, in this particular project my intent is to draw people into my world.
