I headcanon Frieza and his race to be naturally good swimmers. You'd think they'd be able to really book it through the water with that long powerful tail of theirs and I bet they can stay underwater for outrageous amounts of time.Related content

I saw your recent tumblr post about this too and frankly, it does seem like it'd make a good amount of sense.
I'm wondering though if they like, evolutionarily were sorta a "reverse frog" situation? Cause, we've seen with the first couple forms they're horned and (mostly?) bulky and their appendages and such got that ribbing going on. All of which I think would produce a lot of drag, no? BUT, if they were initially land critters it could be that those things are used for locomotion and protection and such. With the bulkier second form being like, one of those "if they survive long enough they get bigger to ward off bigger threats" kinda thing (like iirc gators do). Third form is pretty self-explanatory, it's a transitory between the bulky, horned land form and the streamlined water one.
"But, where does that leave 5th forms like with Cooler" you ask? Well, for one thing afaik those aren't canon (I thought only one or two DBZ movies were canonical, if even that?). But, for argument's sake let's say they are. It could be operating on similar logic to form 2, e.g "you get bigger and tougher, you got bigger and tougher competition to fend off." Sure, in form 4 you can get away from most stuff on your speed and agility in the water. But as your mass increases your drag will too, and your competition won't need to be as fast to catch up. And while yes, it does have horns again, the shape being a slanted, curvedish, crest of sorts feels like it'd be more streamlined than the "straight upright regular horns" or "jutting out the side of their heads" ones. I feel you could argue it's meant as a like "the benefits of both land and water with less drawbacks" thing.
Ooorrr, I'm just overthinking this cause I thought it was neat and went running with it and I've not talked to ya in a while. That's possible too xD

It seems like Frieza's race has a lot of both aquatic and tree-climbing adaptations. They have ape-like feet with gripping toes usually only seen in arboreal animals. Their tails are long and powerful, good for swimming, but also prehensile, another trait almost exclusive to climbing animals. That makes it really hard to figure out what kind of environment Frieza's race evolved in. The only animals I can think of that are both good swimmers and good climbers are some species of monitor lizards and they live in flooded forests and mangrove swamps. I'm not sure whether the species started in water and evolved to live on land or the other way around; I guess it depends on whether you see Frieza's lower forms as more primitive than his final form or that his final form is the most primitive and his lower forms are more recent evolutions.
And don't even get me started on how Frieza's race evolved to survive in space lol. Not only do they have to survive without oxygen, they also need to be resistant to rapid changes in pressure and temperature extremes. The only way I can think of in which they naturally evolved these traits would be for diving very deep into the ocean to catch prey maybe?
Technically 5th form isn't canon because Cooler isn't canon (which is a crying shame). I haven't really thought about 5th form very much yet. I always thought of is as an extremely rare aberrant form.
Lol don't worry about it, welcome to the "thinking about fictional character way too much" club!
