Description
I heavily suggest downloading this, since I designed it to be downloaded. The second part of this, explaining how to draw May, Dawn, Brock, and Gary, will be out sometime soon.Something I forgot: put a space of two eyeballs between the eyes. I thought it was one, but I was going off of human proportions--I've been corrected to two. For those who aren't so big on a grid format, you can look at this image , provided very kindly by , for help in feature placement. This will be taken into consideration when I do the second page, so there'll probably be more information about eye placement and all that when Part 2 is up.
Please note: this is by far NOT the only way to draw an anime face. However, this is how I would draw an anime face, which is why I wrote it. I designed this for beginners so they could get a sense of proportion and then explore their own style from there. If the grid format is not for you, awesome! I, however, do actually use it in every drawing I make (yes, even the chibis had their faces quartered), so I feel it's the most useful way for any beginner to learn how to draw a face. I hope everyone finds it helpful...and if it isn't, I'm sorry about that. Please let me know how to improve.

Not yet....I never got around to making it XD And I never got commissioned to finish this, so...*shrug* Maybe sometime when I have time. I've learned a few new techniques since I drew this.

Thanks This is pretty old...I'm planning on making another one soon on a different way how to draw Pokemon style with Dawn and May (and maybe Brock). I just haven't gotten around to it yet XD

It should work for everyone except Brock. Brock's got a square chin so you'd have to draw him a bit differently....I'll be doing a short tut on how to do him and the other main girls shortly ^^ but yes, this should work for almost everyone.

You did a great job getting the eye style and the hair right, but I think the eyes are too close to each other and some of the face are not symmetrical and not centered... Even using all those guide lines (some are kinda unnecessary ;/) I think if you simplify the method and focus more on the features than in the guide lines you can do much better

moonymonster In reply to tinini [2011-02-19 01:45:07 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I should've gone over that....and I was drawing the same face over and over I don't expect anyone using this to do it perfectly, because I certainly didn't. It's just there to show the basics. If I can figure out a way to simplify it, I will--but for me, I've always relied on guidelines. I can't figure out where stuff goes if I don't know a basic place to put it. If you can figure out how to simplify it please let me know ^^ I haven't actually drawn anime style in years--I draw in a more American comic-book style--so figuring out how to do a simpler anime style was actually a bit tricky.

I like these guidelines! And I tested and you can use it in pokemon too
You draw the head like you've been doing and divide it in half, the eyes start there.
Then divide that in half again, the eyes end there. divide in half one more time, there is the mouth... and the nose is from the end of the eye to the mouth. I can do a picture of it if you don't understand
And in pokemon style the space between eyes is about 2 eyes not just 1, that's why yours look too close even though that's the realistic measure XD

moonymonster In reply to tinini [2011-02-19 19:00:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah...can you draw that for me? I'm a visual learner, not a reading learner (I think you can see that here XD). I've still got to do May, Dawn, and Brock, so I'll just put in what you've shown me as an alternate method in the next page--with credit, of course ^^

moonymonster In reply to tinini [2011-02-19 20:21:33 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it does ^^ But if you put in the center line, it'd look a lot like my grid, too...but I'll experiment with that and see if I can use your picture to simplify the grid. I definitely need a way to nail down the space between the eyes...The middle of the eye is where the middle of the head is, and the tops and bottoms take up one-third of the head. The hairline's still at the 1/4th mark...looks like in this photo the nose is right on line with the eyes, but Misty's a little turned here, so we'd need a straight-on shot to be certain...and the mouth is on the 2/3 line. Now for the up-and-down from the looks of it you'd still do the 1/4-3/4 thing, but put the eyes on the OUTSIDE of the 1/4-3/4....that's probably where I screwed up, since human eyes don't work that way. I'll fix that up. Prolly should do it on this page, cept this one's all inked in...hmm. I guess I'll do it on the second page and on this one say "other improved tecniques on page two, harhar, now you HAVE to see the sequel, eh?".

Yeah, but after a while of using this half-half thing, I can already guess where to put things... I stopped using the mouth and nose line, and I just keep using the eye one to make sure they're aligned. Did you already try not using the lines to see how your drawings look?
haha put it on the second, you'll get more pageviews XD

I think it's fine once you get a bit of practice, and like I said, each person has their own style. In this one I decided to grid the hell out of it, because a beginner has no idea what goes where and no sense of where it goes, and I'm assuming everyone who reads this has never lifted a pencil before. It's much safer than assuming they're secretly art majors and are looking at this for the heck of it. I've seen a few tutorials that make the assumption that I know what the artist knows, and it bothers me because I don't. I always draw in a more realistic style, and I still depend on guidelines, but I know that's not for everyone...but I find that when I was first learning, I was amazed how much easier it became to put things when I had a place to put them. I don't expect people to use these in every single drawing (I certainly didn't get that detailed for the chibis), and I'm sure once they get the sense of where things go they can ditch some of the guidelines...but it's important to know they're there in the first place, so you have a base to start from. If you don't know your ABCs, how do you expect to read War and Peace?

Flyffel In reply to moonymonster [2011-02-19 01:55:23 +0000 UTC]
I meant doing all those unnecessary lines etc. I always facepalm when I see "how to draw" book saying "use them". I think that they are unnecessary. Just draw the outlines of the face, hair, and then details like eyes, nose, ears.
I approve of "step one", though. Like when you draw hard poses, you should first sketch the forms. ^^
π: 0 β©: 1
moonymonster In reply to Flyffel [2011-02-19 19:04:11 +0000 UTC]
I actually always use guidelines. It's why I put them on the tutorial I wouldn't put up things I didn't use constantly myself. Even professional artists still use guidelines to help themselves locate everything they need to find--that's why I did the 'mini-me' drawing in the corner. If outlines work for you, that is totally awesome ^^ But for me, I need to know where to put things. It's not really necessary to get so detailed for a simple pose like this, but when you're doing the weirder angles like 3/4th or something looking up or down or with their back to you...then you need to know where stuff goes, or it doesn't go in the right place.
But that's just me. Each person has their own style of artwork; I'm just showing people mine, and it is in no way difinite. If it was, learning how to draw would be a hell of a lot easier XD

I kinda told you how hard it'd be. I thought when I took the commission it was faces only, especially because everything else in your group is faces only. Bodies is...well, any artist will tell you how much of a pain bodies are. You can fudge them a bit, but with something like this I'd need a lot of time and probably some help to figure out how to do it. This is the first time I've done anime-style in years, and I'm used to drawing American comic-book style--basically, stylized realism versus really really deformed bodies (but deformed in a cute way). I'll look at it and see what I can do. I'm going to finish this one first, especially since I've been getting advice on how to improve it.

I'm kind of sad that they did change the eye style... It defined the eyes as specifically the pokemon anime. Now it's kind of a hybrid of Pokemon and generic anime eyes...
π: 0 β©: 1
moonymonster In reply to Rathdrgnknight [2011-02-18 19:38:48 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of them either. I just try to write it off to that they're trying to reinvent the anime after fifteen years, so they want to change the look. Besides, the eyes changed after Sinnoh--May and Misty all have the 'first season' eyes, but Dawn has the new eyes. It's really noticible when May shows up with the old eye style and stands next to Dawn with the new style...so I guess they want Ash to match that too. Never quite got it myself. I liked his old eyes. But what can ya do?
π: 0 β©: 1
Rathdrgnknight In reply to moonymonster [2011-02-18 23:26:11 +0000 UTC]
Well, I haven't really watched it since the episode where Misty came back in Hoenn for one or two episodes, so... XD I really disliked Dawn... that, and Ash should be at least 25 by now...
