The tension between the United Nations Space Command (U.N.S.C.) and the Galactic Republic came to an all time high when the Terran Embassy took in and sheltered accused Padawan Ahsoka Tano from wrongful prosecution at the hands of the Republic Military Tribune. With the secret aid of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, a UNSC convoy smuggled Ahsoka back to Earth where she would stay until the matter was resolved, but a Republic Venator-class destroyer managed to chase them down on orders from Grand Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin. The Republic star destroyer failed to respond to UNSC warships stationed in orbit around Earth and was subsequently seen as a threat, but before any real fighting could begin - several gunships and escape pods detached from the vessel and spiralled down to Earth. The UNSC responded in kind and treated the clone troopers as invaders.
