I... really have mixed feelings.... the vet says that it won't work... I try to convince myself that it will. But who am I kidding, this is real life! He will probably just start suffering.... and then, he will never have a chance at life! If I say yes...he...will....die.
When the vet told us 4 months ago that Ace would have twins, I was devistated. I know that 80% of twin foals will die at birth or before. It was especily difficult for me since I knew Ace was young and I had let myself get consimed with lust, only seeing a foal by the Tudor in my barn. And now I might loose the best horse in my barn plus her babies.
When Ace got near the birthing time, I had 2 staff members watching her, much to their complaint, 24/7.
Later she went into labor, and my vet, Dr. Martin, was already on hand. After 10... 20...30 minutes ticked by, the vet gaave me terrible news. The first foal had his head twisted around and was stuck. Dr. Martin tried in vain to get the foal's head turned around however his arm would not reach. Ace was starting to groan in pain and Justin, who had been coldly silent till now, shouted ,"GOD DAMN IT! WE ARE OUT OF TIME!" I was startled as he stormed into the stall and lifted Ace's head. He whispered that he was gonna save her the watked around to her tail. He told Dr.Martin to move and that he was going to give it a try.
My eyes were starting to leak now. This had now dragged on to 45 minutes and Ace's breathing was slowly decreasing! Justin strained trying to reach the foal. After 50 minutes, I had Ace's listless head in my lap trying to give her strength. She was slowly falling uncosious and I knew that this was it. Ace's head dropped... then Justin shouted "I got it!" He reached the foal's nose and had pulled its head free! Ace Resumed her efforts and the foal emmerged followed by another with little complications. I squeezed Ace and then went to see the foals.
Justin was frowning and the vet was shaking his head. The first foal was a dark brown with a tan muzzle. But there was something horribly wrong with him. As he slowly stood after many attempts to stand next to his sister, I could see he had badly bowed legs and a cloudy eye. He wobbled towards Ace who was now standing. I had known mares to regect unhealthy foals. And then his sister, a strong light chestnut with splashes and a large blaze, started to move towards her mothers milk too. There was a good chance that she would bully the little colt for milk.
However, she desided to prove my fears wrong. She actually let the weak colt stumble pass and started grooming his mane while he drank and waited her turn. Ace, at first unsure, now was vigerously switching between the foals with long strokes of her tongue.
Of course then another problem arose. The colt seemed to suddenly loose balence and crumpled in a heap. We carried the foal to an Xray room built into the foaling barn. Turns out he had some sort of nurological problem as well. Dr. Martin insisted that he be put down. He would very possibly walk, let alone race. I asked Justin and Martin to leave me for a moment so they left the room and went back to attend to Ace.
I finally alowed my self to cry. Between sobs, I begged the little colt to give me a sign, a sign to say he would be ok. After awhile i must have drifted off cause I was jolted awake when my face was being tickled. Thinking it was one of the ball cats, I pushed it away then realized it wasn't a cat at all! The little colt had stood up and walked over to me. When I pushed him away, his knees started to buckle again. I grabble him to keep him standing and laughed. I hadn't laughed since I found out about the twins and it felt good. I called Martin back in five minutes later and told him he wasn't gonna have to waste his euthinasia medicine today.
Today, a week later, I watch as Fleetfoot, the filly, Leads Bow n' Arrow, the colt, around the field. Cause Of his poor vision he normally tripped and slid till Fleet noticed and leaned up agints him. Now they walk around the field together. Fleet paciently waits whenever Bow tumbles onto the ground and frequently walks him back to Ace for a milk break. So what if he never races? He is a perfectly happy guy. Though I still wonder, maybe with some TLC, he just might,... no its not possible.... but just maybe....
