I've been curious of this style for quite some time now. I've been trying to develop my own personalized style like this -- but my question is, when approaching a piece like this, where do you start? A light overall sketch and then develop the 3d effect with crosshatching / shading?

Think of it as calligraphy. This is the artist's handle, written in an extremely stylized way (this being the basis of most graffiti).
Just look harder.
