Great shot! The lens you had with you would have weighed a tonne.

From this perspective it reminds me of the AT-ATs from star wars...
Anyway, amazing shot. You have my honest respect for what you do and how you do it.

Absolutely perfect composition here buddy. I love the way he's looking just out of frame too. It makes you wonder where the 'moment' goes after this was taken!
Super sharp too. That 500mm seems to love that teleconverter I was thinking of getting one for my 300 actually...
Random question.. was this taken from a vehicle? The angle seems slightly too low unless you were hanging out the side handheld!

Thanks Lawrie. I was lying on my belly about 12 meters from him!
Most of my results with the 500 + 1.4x are tack sharp. There have been some instances where focus/sharpness was not as desired but they are once-in-a-few-thousand shutter actuations apart.

Oh really?!!? That's quite something! How did you get so close on the ground?
It really has to be with that lens. It's one of the best Nikon make easily...
Ah ok.. so that's not too bad. Do you notice much difference with the teleconverter?

We approached them slowly and lay down a safe distance from them to photograph them. The alpha male later decided he wanted a closer look and approached us...
