Description

Belle is staying at Beasty-boys house, on and off while her Father is on business trips.
He goes on many trips and often, so she stays there often. probably has her own room.

Ariel picked Moby Dick
Rapunzel - The adventures of Robin Hood.
(You can almost spot them in their hands in comic nr 44 )

Admitting and dealing with reading and writing issues can be hard, reading and spelling in particular is still associated with intelligence or lack there of. It can easily be a sore point.
Here though, it’s just the two of them and sitting and listening to your beloved’s voice and having an excuse to look at them for an extended period of time, doesn’t sound so bad.

And I don't think it is as bad as full blown dyslexia either. such things are nuanced.

I'll be honest, I didn't like that they added that scene into the movie. It felt like they portrayed it like he'd forgotten how to read after getting turned into a beast, not that he had reading difficulties, and Belle was going to re-teach him how to read, which didn't make sense to me. He was a prince and would have gotten an education, and I have a hard time believing that you can just forget how to read.

THIS though, I like a lot! It feels much more genuine. I love Belle's face when he starts reading, you can clearly see that she realizes that she put him in an embarrassing position and feels bad about it. And the look he gives her on the last panel. It's just a lovely moment.

I thought it 's art stood out so horridly, but what irked me even more was the song, I didn't like the art or the song.

Thank you even if the art annoyed me, I liked the subject matter and how they bonded a little and I thought that would easily translate to this AU

I almost always skip that scene when watching the movie these days and don't remember how the art looked but I remember the song being just Meh... Maybe I should watch it again and see what I would think of it today.

Yeah, you wrote and drew this scene beautifully. You didn't make him look stupid and the bonding between them just makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

well you can't really blame the this one on anyone really; the producers may have messed up in the way they put the scene, but the Prince was turned into a Beast when was 11, and turned human again when he was 21, that's 10 years of no reading at all......

KynOfTheNorth In reply to BBBBGarden-Golden [2015-05-02 20:30:48 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough, but it is kind of hard to believe that he would never read during those years despite having that library. I can absolutely buy that he didn't read very much, but even if he would never even touch those books it's hard to avoid reading altogether. I'm sure some of the rooms have signs on the door and paintings are signed by their artists and other things like that.
Though, I'll admit I might have judged the scene almost completely on my first impression of it when I saw it for the first time several years ago, where I got kind of a "He can't read, he not very smart, Belle can read, she very smart"-vibe and really didn't like that. Almost every time I watch the movie these days I skip that scene.

I guess, but one has to remember that it was Shakespeare "Romeo and Juliet" that Belle was reading and that is no light reading even for adults, if we follow your reasoning, which is completely plausible, he would only read signs like "Storage Room" "Kitchen" and artists' names - I'm an avid reader, but I think I would be a lot more preocupied about the whole "there is a curse on me" than reading, particularly considering the Prince's character before and during the movie; I liked that scene, it showed a more vulnerable side of his personality, he was admiting quite a... perhaps not 'flaw'  but a major 'weakness' per se for someone that clearly had a very deep knowledge of literature; I think this scene was more of a "bonding experience" than a veiled atempt to say "Belle is smarter"; one scene that I absolutely abhore in the movie thought, it's the way Belle showed to everyone in a simple minded village the "Beast", seriously what exactly did she expect the reaction to be? I always skip that one LOL

Very fair points, I haven't read "Romeo and Juliet" so I can't say how difficult of a read it is. It does annoy me a bit, though, that it's always portrayed as "THE most ROMANTIC story of ALL TIIIIIME" when it was never intended to be.
I do like when we get to see characters' vulnerabilities but I think it could have been executed better. Like in how Moroth88 did on this page.
You mean the scene where she shows them Beast through the mirror? Well, the villagers were in the process of taking her father to a mental institution where he clearly didn't belong. It was a stressful situation where she only had three options shown to her, 1, saving her father by marrying Gaston, a douchebag that cared nothing for her needs and she would never be happy with, 2, not marrying Gaston but letting her father be sent off to the mental institution, or 3, saving her father by proving he was telling the truth, and by doing so not having to marry Gaston. She only had seconds to act and didn't have the time to stop and think "Hmm, are the villagers going to go on a rampage lead by Gaston and try to kill Beast?" and she did try to assure them that he wasn't dangerous. Not easy trying to convince anyone that a roaring beast with sharp teeth isn't dangerous but she did have limited options during a short amount of time.

True, people tend to act without thinking under duress, and I think I can try to understand her point of view about the whole affair, but this scene just rubs me off the wrong way, doesn't matter how many times I watch it I always think the same thing "what is her problem?"; I think Beauty and the Beast was never CALLED the "The most romantic story of all time", the only thing I ever heard along the lines were "Tale as old as time", that phrase is always linked with the Beauty and the Beast... never heard it being called the most ROMANTIC, but whatevs; either way, I agree that it could have been better executed, but the theme and the idea behind the scene is what always make me go "awww" at it. Besides, on the topic of "plotholes", I think it was bloody way to punish a 11 year old, I mean the sorceress went to "test" him by asking for shelter, and perhaps it is true that he is cold, arrogant and selfish, but he didn't say "you're ugly, you're not going into my house" he just turned her away, this particular "test" doesn't show either one, the only thing it showed was that he was unwinlling to let a complete stranger in and let said stranger sleep in his house (castle, but the point is the same), which BTW was completely reasonable. He could have been "tested" in a million of others ways without it making out the Sorceress as a complete **** (don't know if Deviantart has a policy agains curses lol)
PS-It's interesting, this is the first time that I have debate without the other party storming off or being insulted, seriously this is NOT my intention, I'm not being agressive, it's just the way I walk; XP

No no, I meant that Romeo and Juliet has the reputation of being the most romantic story, despite actually being satire, not Beauty and the Beast itself.

Well, we all percieve things differently. One thing that feels odd or wrong to one person can make perfect sense to another.
And yes, the sorceress was a horrible person! Not only for what she did to an 11-year-old boy, but to all the other people living in the castle. They never did anything wrong!

A level-headed debate is always fun. I didn't find you aggressive at all.

ohhh! My bad
Ahmmm... I don't know... Romeo and Juliet is considered the most romantic story of all time, probably because how it was portrayed, I highly doubt that Shakespeare meant for it to be considered as such, but who cares, it's more of how love can affect people and make them do the ultimate choices and sacrifices, not always logical, smart or even reasonable, because love isn't neither and althought there are plenty of tales and stories that have the same message that are from the same epoc or even older, such as Trojan War and Wuthering Heights; Romeo and Juliet is always invict as being the "spokesperson". I agree that this is NOT the most romantic story of all times, for me? It's story of two very dumb kids (did you know that Romeo and Juliet were 14???) with comunications problems which in this case proved to be fatal (the whole plot went downhill when Juliet failed to relay her plan of "faking her death" to Romeo and Romeo thought she was truly dead and killed himself, when Juliet "woke up" to find his body she also killed herself        ) C'MON! This is NOT romantic this is just idiotic;
Well you're one of the very few; it's not always, but last time I gave my opinion, the same I did here, you know? Just defending my pov without attacking, no curses no nothing the person went "You have nothing to do with it, keep your mouth shut because this is freedom of speech", I mean the person went on and on like this for a t least 12 lines and the whole time I was reading it the only thing in my head was "Holy... internet people are sensitive" lol

KynOfTheNorth In reply to BBBBGarden-Golden [2015-05-10 18:21:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I was aware of that. I saw a video from Nostalgia Critic where he had a theory that maybe it was supposed to be a tragedy not because they couldn't have their "true love", but because the families were so stubborn and wouldn't budge on their grudges and two children who were too young to really know what love was lost their lives.
I haven't read much of Shakespear's work so I don't know what the intended moral was, though.

Huh... Sometimes it seems like the people who use the Freedom of Speech argument the most are the ones who know the least of what Freedom of Speech actually is.

I enjoyed this discussion we had though. Have a nice day!

Yes! In the Broadway Play during the song "Something More", Belle learns that the Beast never learned to read so she reads to him. This is obviously a bit different but still super adorable. I cant wait to see the other couples. Maybe Eric will get a few words out of Ariel. Or maybe Rapunzel will start to no longer want to smack Flynn in the face. (: (: Cant wait!
