Description All right, this is an example of an Ifrit, (plural efreeti), inspired by ideas from mythology, Ao no Exorcist, and my own original ideas.

Efreeti are very interesting demons, as they are as varied in their temperaments as humans. Some of them are as dangerous as the flames they control; others can be very useful and steadfast allies. In fact, some efreeti have even been heroes in times past, and earned redemption. Therefore, it is impossible to predict whether an ifrit is evil just by looking at them, which in some ways make them particularly dangerous.

They can be either sex but tend to be female. They can create and control both fire and thick, oily smoke, and stronger ones are capable of generating wings from these elements (as pictured). Their hands end in terribly sharp, soot stained claws that cause burning wounds that sizzle for a short while after they are inflicted. All efreeti possess horns and feet resembling an ibex or other wild goat that come in a variety of colors, from natural tones to burnished gold and even black. Their skin is a ruddier version of their vessel's, or in some rare cases vibrant red or pitch black. Efreeti are one of the few demons that can turn into inanimate objects; in fact they are master shapeshifters and can turn into creatures and objects of any size or complexity (depending on their strength), but these are disguises and are not useful for fighting. Those familiar with the efreeti will know to look for faint smoke (or the odor of the same) emanating from objects/creatures where they are expecting an ifrit.

Humans possessed by an ifrit are always warmer to the touch than is natural (many would consider them feverish, though they won't act as if they have a fever). Particularly powerful efreeti have an even more difficult time hiding in a vessel--their touch can cause flammable objects to alight and is very uncomfortable, even painful, upon the flesh of mortals and they tend to leave behind sooty footprints (even when wearing shoes).

Most efreeti can also teleport short distances by disappearing in a puff of smoke, and can become a cloud of smoke to get through small spaces (very useful, as their preferred domiciles are caves). Sometimes they do this to hide in small objects, such as oil lamps and clay pots.

In the past, the efreeti were much maligned for their tendency to abduct humans as spouses or slaves. They are one of the vary few demons known to intermarry (and successfully remain with) humans, likely due to their similar temperaments, but they force their paramours to enter efreeti society (not the other way around) so such humans are never seen or heard from again (unless they escape somehow).

I love the colour scheme of this, but I'm missing some of the detailed description from the other studies (or maybe I've just gotten spoiled by the other studies, heh). The veil covering mouth and nose intrigues me, for one thing. The concubi had a very straightforward condition to go with the veil over their eyes, so is there something similar for the efreeti?

This is one of those designs that I feel like I could adopt and use without it conflicting with my own lore, if you would let me do that. I have an ifrit planned as a familiar (although he would much rather see his Tamer as his wife, but she isn't interested no matter how much he shows off his powers to impress her) and I could see him work out very well with this design. I can tell you more about it if you want to know what type of character your concept will be used for before you decide.

(I am so tired. I read "Those familiar with the efreeti will know to look for faint smoke (or the odor of the same) emanating from objects/creatures where they are expecting an ifrit." and immediately thought of my old compact digital camera. It somehow survived mountain trekking through a monsoon in New Zealand but it wasn't the same afterwards: if I try to use the flash, it will give off a puff of smoke along with the flash. Might it be an ifrit?)

I'll probably add more as I go along, since the story is constantly evolving in my head. But yes, I could see how the others would have spoiled you.

It's actually a little silly why they wear the veil (not all of them do). It's because both male and female efreeti have goat like beards, and while they obviously don't care about this while amongst their own kind, they've found that humans can be disdainful of females that have goatees, so they tend to cover them up with extravagant veils like the one pictured.

I am totally fine with you using the concept I have created here (with attribution of course). Sounds like a pretty good fit, actually!

I doubt it, but you might want to slap a seal on it just in case.

Haha I know, stories have their own ecosystems and evolution. I'll keep my fingers crossed for more trivia then. *w*

xD What a reason indeed! That's one of the things I love most: the contrasts between human society and demon society. I've grown up travelling a lot but I'm still like a kid when I go to new places, wanting to look at everything and ask about everything and what it's for. I can imagine a demon's first visit to Assiah is something downright mindblowing - and mighty confusing. xD "But they have beards, too: why are they staring at mine?" Do your male efreeti wear veils, too? Or do they have some other variation to their attire?

I did do a little bit of background checking for my ifrit, but nothing as thorough as yours. Vuthisa isn't really an explosive-tempered ifrit, but he's passionate. So when he cares about his tamer, he carries out her orders with gusto (and to impress) and ends up doing a lot of unnecessary damage. The behaviour mirrors that of his tamer, in a way. Dazuluka has pushed and shoved her way forward in life, out of apartheid South Africa and into Vatican City, and thus often pushes/shoves more than what's necessary out of habit, easily doing damage of her own without intending to.

Now I just might draw a little seal to put on my camera. It has some fake blood on its string from a zombie walk event and overall it looks like it might kind of be cursed or possessed. xD

I've already been updating the others a bit. I'll get to this one soonish, haha.

The males can wear veils if they wish, although they tend towards shorter, half-mask like coverings if they cover their face at all (I forget what those things are called...like what bandits/highwaymen wear?). Their beards are usually a fair amount longer and bushier than the females (of course there are exceptions), so they have a tendency towards extravagant styling and ornamentation.

My efreeti vary greatly in temperament as mentioned, so Vuthisa would fit right in. They are most definitely a passionate people! They sound like an interesting pair. I understand the tendency to always be on guard and overreacting...as a woman in America I still have to deal with a fair amount of sexism from my male colleagues, especially here in the South. Unfortunately when you face that kind of stuff daily (and have throughout your life) you tend to attack even your allies when it comes to such matters. I will definitely have to read about their adventures together.

That is quite an amusing idea. If you do it, I would like to see pictures, haha.

I blame my Viking heritage, but I love beard ornamentation. x9 They will look marvellous. I'm starting to think of maybe drawing Vuthisa now but ahhhhh time! Thanks for filling me in on the culture of efreeti. (Highwaymen masks... Is the only name I could find for them. )

...I honestly don't know what I would've done if I had to work in a place where my colleagues acted like that towards me. =T Mockingly addressed and treated them like intellectually challenged five-year-olds, maybe. It probably wouldn't have accomplished anything save let me blow some steam off. What is it you work with? (If you don't mind me asking.)

(I'll go check the updated profiles out when time permits!)

Heh. I keep trying to get my husband to do something with his, as it is rather long and could be easily styled into something interesting. But alas, he resists my attempts. :/ You're welcome! There's still more to come but I've been in a stupidly lazy mood for the last half week. *sigh* Well, at least you know what I'm talking about with the masks.

Yeah, there is very little that can be done to change people's minds about things like that. It's kind of like racism...you can argue with them all day about how stupid they're being but their minds will only change with time. I just strive everyday to show them how awesome I am compared to their backwards ideas concerning antiquated gender roles. Oh, I don't mind at all! I'm a freight clerk--my job is to route freight shipments to the trailers that they will be loaded on so that they reach the proper destination (I work in the trucking industry). I also help assign trailers for unloading to dock workers and handle most of the correspondence (my boss is an old man and very forgetful, so I have to keep a careful eye on things). It's an industry dominated by men but it doesn't bother me most of the time. If anything, the tedium is the worst part (it's very repetitive).

It's not really what I want to be doing in the long run but one must pay the bills, haha...

Cool. I look forward to your feedback, when time permits.

He has a long beard... and he DOESN'T play with it? If I could grow a proper beard I'd do nothing but style it all day long! xD Mah, but since that's not an option I resort to bothering friends. There was a guy in my old college class who didn't resist my advances on his dreadlocks, so his hairstyles became the weekly entertainment. Braiding dreadlocks allows you to shape them, you know? So I could make Eiffel Towers and scorpion tails on his head. 8] But for some reason every dreadlock-wearer I knew has cut the dreads off. I have no idea why...

It does sound like a repetitive job. :/ On the upside, I suppose it's a job that permits daydreaming and developing creative projects. And maybe reforming one or two backwards-minded colleagues. One can always hope they've got the awareness and security in themselves to admit that you've proven their ideas wrong. I think I sound very utopian now... x'D

Hahaha Yeah, I know! What's wrong with him? I am so envious of beards and the fact that I can't wear one unless it's Halloween... >:[ But I don't know if I'd want to grow one, as they do seem like they'd get a bit itchy. One of the things I can kind of get away with his beard though is sneaking things like pencils and pens in there when he's not paying attention. His beard has a very tight curl so it holds things well, haha. It curls so tightly that it only goes to his clavicle normally, but when straightened goes past his chest.

That sounds so awesome. I've never had the opportunity to braid dreadlocks, so I had no idea... Funny how that worked out. Perhaps you should tell them you're reformed now and show them that innocent face and see if they'll grow them back.

It would be...if it weren't a problem when I didn't pay attention (because things tend to snowball if problems get overlooked). I take frequent, short breaks though, which helps, haha. I like to think that I'm a positive influence on the people around me...but I can't be sure :/.
