God, this is creepy. Chernobyl terrified me as a child, even more so because I didn't fully understand what I was seeing on the news--all I knew was that everyone had to get out or die because of something you couldn't see or taste or smell. This picture pretty much embodies every nuclear holocaust nightmare I ever had (and any kid who grew up during the Cold War had plenty, I'm sure.) Beautiful photograph, if terrifying.

I remember reading somewhere that radiation (if concentrated enough) feels like rain against your skin and tastes like metal.

Eeeeg...I've always imagined it feeling like your skin must be sizzling, but I have a really unfortunate imagination. XD I wonder if the taste is the plutonium? It would be interesting to read any interviews with the liquidators, assuming any of them are still alive.

It's an olde sk0ole gas mask -- the kind they had before they were made with filters that fit into the mask itself (hence the nose hose thing).
