DISCORD: I wanna kill that alicorn (** Pencil Magic - my pony me **) and his adorable little pony friends for good and I take over the whole world! [evil laugh]
Discord the draconequus, the spirit of Chaos, was introduced in the second season's two-part premiere; the character, as penned by Faust, was originally inspired by Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the animators further made more comparisons to the character once they were able to get John De Lancie, who played Q, to voice the role.

Expressions speak what words sometimes cannot. In this case, making Discord appear deranged transmits an aura of intimidation that you just don't usually get with such a goofy character. It's a good contrast to his typical self!

Discord is the most naughty villain ever since Bowser (sometimes King Koopa in the SMB shows), King K. Rool from Donkey Kong and No Heart from Care Bears.

Yeah. Discord is based on the Star Trek character Q who is also played by John de Lancie.
Much like John de Lancie's popular character Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Discord appears with a bright white flash, and the two even share some mannerisms, including a fondness for "games" and snapping his fingers to use his powers.
[In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Q Who", Picard refers to Q as "...next of kin to chaos"]
