Description
All credit for the above image goes to Torqual3D. He's really outdone himself this time -- zoom in for a closer look, and drop by his page to compliment him if you feel like doing so!CIARA NIGHTINGALE & THE TOMB OF DOOM -- Choose Your Own Adventure Story, with Rewards & Achievements!
Greetings to all!
The product of over a year’s worth of collaboration, brainstorming, editing, beta-testing, and re-editing, I am pleased to present a thrilling and horrific Choose-Your-Own Adventure story:
writer.inklestudios.com/storie…
(The link will take you to an external site, Inklewriter, where you can play through the adventure)
Take on the mantle of the stunning Ciara Nightingale, the black-haired archaeologist (character of the talented ), as she explores an enigmatic and deadly tower, populated with all manner of monsters and traps lying in wait for her. Guide Ciara around them – or straight through them! – as she tries to uncover the answer to a mystery that’s been nagging her for some time. Not to mention simply trying to survive!
Given this locale, the dangers are more acute, the mood darker, and the stakes higher than any of the Amanda Jones Student Sleuth stories, and probably even greater than most of the Summer Sleuth or college hijinks adventures. So while I have not tried to include any “gotcha” endings, and have tried to include clues where possible about the way(s) to succeed at a given task, bear in mind that this is an isolated, labyrinthine, murderous, horrific place! Sometimes plans which might otherwise be advisable will go south due to current circumstances, and occasionally simple bad luck is a factor. Ciara is totally on her own here, and many of the traps and dungeon denizens won’t hold back.
While I’d be ecstatic if you try to explore every option and read everything, please don’t feel compelled to do so – the story, with all its pathways, totals about 65,000 words in all! There are also “randomizer” factors which lead to hidden rooms and dangers, which readers may not come across in a single course of play. The whole idea is to encourage replayability; some of the paths are mutually exclusive, and unless you stumble across a hidden area opened up by a randomizer, you might never know it was there.
So, in short, don’t be alarmed if you run into a seemingly pointless choice that has no payoff. I assure you, it will – though maybe not during this particular playthrough.
And for frustrated completionists, if you absolutely have to have a guide to seeing all the content, send me a note and I may have mercy on you .
And of course, if anyone discovers a bug or other problem, let me know and I’ll edit straightaway.
REWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS
So what’s this about “Rewards and Achievements,” you ask? Well…
There’s nothing we writers enjoy so much as substantial enjoyment of, feedback on, and conversation about our work, so we want to encourage as much of it as possible. This is our way of doing so. For those of you who play through different portions of the adventure – and can prove it – you will be rewarded!
Top Tier
I will write an approximately 1,000-word story including Ciara Nightingale and your avatar or OC (subject to discretion). Alternatively, I will write an encounter, puzzle, or monster of your devising into either the Tomb of Doom or a future lair of horrors that Ciara or Amanda Jones will explore.
Top Tier rewards will be awarded for:
- The first person to post a comment to this deviation quoting the last line of a song Ciara remembers and hums to herself during this adventure.
- The first person to post a comment to this deviation naming the five ghosts Ciara may encounter in this adventure.
- The first person to post a comment to this deviation naming five different memories Ciara has of her father in this adventure.
- The first person to post a comment to this deviation naming at least 15 ways Ciara can meet a grisly end in this adventure.
- The first person to post a comment to this deviation giving the true name of the beast otherwise known as the Gorger.
If someone is the first to achieve more than one of the above, they will receive a longer reward story – but a reward slot will also remain open for someone else who has not yet achieved a prize. The more the merrier!
Second Tier
I will mention you or your OC in a future lair of horrors that Ciara or Amanda Jones will explore.
Second Tier rewards will be awarded for anyone who posts a comment to this deviation naming at least three things they liked about the adventure.
Of course all feedback, however positive, negative, or detailed, is always welcome.
Because of the format of the rewards, everyone should also regard the comments section as one massive spoiler! Conduct your reading of the comments accordingly.
All reward recipients will be contacted, so I can find out how exactly to handle your reward. ALL text prizes will be produced and awarded through my dA page, so placing me on your watch list is the best way to ensure that you see your reward as soon as it’s ready. Though I will try to contact each reward recipient as the rewards are posted. And even if you’re not receiving a Top Tier reward – feel free to watch anyway, so you can enjoy the stories as they come out!
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I’d like to give a special vote of thanks to all the individuals who helped in the testing phase of this adventure – I value each one of them for their willingness to participate and their constructive comments. The adventure is a far better one thanks to their efforts.
Many thanks to:
And, of course, the highest thanks and praise are reserved for the estimable , for conceiving and beginning the story; for the innumerable discussions on expanding, editing, and improving the adventure; for encouraging me whenever my patience with the project flagged; and for giving me free reign to create an adventure around the lovely and determined Ms. Nightingale.
A NOTE ON WORLDBUILDING
Anyone familiar with ’s work knows that his main character, Amanda Jones, has always lived in a world where the supernatural does not exist – her bailiwick is detective work, ferreting out the schemes of natural crooks and mortal schemers. That is the Amandaverse; Ciara Nightingale, as Amanda’s best friend, inhabits that universe. Thankfully for them both, supernatural beasties do not.
Ciara Nightingale & the Tomb of Doom takes place in an alternate reality, where the supernatural does exist. That doesn’t mean it’s common, but it does crop up from time to time. Some other stories, like
Amanda Jones and The Dark Widow of Wicklow
“Tyranny lingers long;
a woman’s memory lingers longer.”
“What’s that about?” Katrin Weber scratched at the stone post's worn inscription. Her English was good, barely accented. Her Germanic roots really only shone through when she was agitated.
“Scheisse.” Her fingernail had broken off.
“It’s part of a legend around here,” her companion Hannah Duffy replied. “From back in 1798, when the Irish rebelled against the British.” The blonde Katrin stood and retraced her steps to the road, where her friends waited.
“What, the Wexford Rebellion? I thought we were in County Wicklow.” The third member of their trio, American Amanda Jones, always seized a chance to show her knowledge of European history was both wide and deep.
The green in Hannah’s eyes flashed, reflecting the verdant mountains above. “The Wexforders got all the press, but t or (arguably) already take place in this alternate reality, the Eldritch Universe. The Tomb of Doom is situated firmly in the Eldritch Universe as well. Future stories in the EU will take Ciara, Amanda, or other Torqual characters further into dealing with the supernatural, in ways never before seen!

Congratulations on escaping, and you are correct! Unfortunately, someone else beat you to the punch in being the first to name the Gorger -- but well done nevertheless, considering it was probably the hardest of the achievements to get. You still qualify for a Second Tier reward, though -- I'll be sending out an update about those soon.
Thanks again for playing, and I hope you get to explore more to your heart's content

That was a hard one. But never fear -- it was never my intention to limit the scope of contributions or suggestions to only those who made the achievements first. If you have a request, suggestion, etc., for either the Tomb of Doom, the sequel, or a standalone short story, just reply on this journal or one of the prize update journals. I'm shameless about using inspiration whencever it comes

A staggering achievement of gosh-wow awesomeness. Kind of pisses me off that I haven't managed to write as much or as well in the last year. You create a real character in this story, not just a body that bears the brunt of the reader's bad decisions. I've managed to find one way out alive, through Obsidias' workroom, among a dozen or so grisly ends, and I expect I'll be winding down all the different paths over the next month or so.

MosbyRedux In reply to QuadCities [2015-11-04 15:18:40 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much for your kind words! Even though much of the character development is of Eldritch Universe Ciara and not mainstream Amandaverse Ciara, I still wanted to explroe what kind of characterization/backstory could be accomplished in a primarily action-driven second-person-viewpoint CYOA. Luckily, most readers seem to have been willing to step into the gloriously golden shoes of Ciara and be told how they feel or what they remember, without too much trouble
We all have our productive times and non-productive times, but in my experience one always gives way to the other in time. I'll admit I'll probably produce less content in the immediate short term, given time to recharge -- but I haven't forgotten the potential for a Kat CYOA either! And she might even appear together with Ciara and Amanda in the sequel to this one, once I have time to write it
I presume you ended up meeting Obsidias, then? It's possible to escape without doing so, but that only means that settling up with him is put off till a later date
Thanks again for playing, enjoying, and commenting -- and if you find any other endigns/pathways that intrigue you, we'd love to hear about it!

***SPOILERS!!!***
After more diligent playthrough, I managed to find the final memory of her father that I was missing... Here is what I came up with...
5 Memories of Ciara's Father...
-When she broke her leg in 3 places climbing Devil's Tower
-Green painted medallion
-In the bathroom stall at the big school dance
-Camping trip bluff the bear encounter
-Lesson learned in the village in Cote d’Ivoire
Such a fun game. I'm really glad that you came up with these challenges

Well done!!! Diligence pays off So glad you're having fun, and that the challenges spiced things up for you.
Spoilers after banana:
There's actually yet another memory (behind the whip door in the tower), but five is definitely sufficient for the prize.

Ha, very awesome spoiler note! And fascinating to now there is even ANOTHER memory. Wow, very well buried indeed. Lots of play-through possibilities. You have outdone yourself. Very compelling and horror themed perils as well. Here is one I recently encountered that I thought was brilliantly worded, frantic, and terrifying:
"Oddly, though, the room is not as dark as before; there seems to be quite a bit of residual glow. Then you realize that the glow is coming from your body! Looking down, you see the strange wisps of light clinging to thousands upon thousands of tiny wriggling figures -- plague fleas, all over your body.
You scream in disgust and horror, and begin frantically pawing at yourself, trying to expunge the death-bearing creatures. You’re so distraught that you barely notice the viscous liquid pouring down from the ceiling, drenching you from head to toe, or the smell of oil.
You sure as hell notice the flames, though."
Poor Ciara. If only I wasn't at the keyboard lol.

Haha, yes, the banana seems to be popular.
Thanks so much for everything you've been saying -- it's wonderful to hear
And yes, that plague room is dastardly; I would not be at all surprised to hear if a lot of people died there on their first try (or first three!). Poor Ciara indeed...and heck, I wrote the darn stuff! Just like our other convo about Dawn and her watchers...I'd better hope Ciara never emerges from the computer and makes me answer for the Tomb of Doom

Good question -- at intervals, the top right corner of a page will show a small arrow saying "rewind to here" -- that will rewind you to that page. Unfortunately you can't just go back to the previous choice (Inklewriter is annoying that way). I put in as many as I could.

Haha, yes, this one was a long and intense effort -- I'm very proud of the result though, and especially glad that so many people seem to be enjoying it! I wanted to make sure there were plenty of options, to encourage replayability -- and with that in mind, some of the DiD subject matter I'm most proud of is hidden away in special rooms that people are only likely to come across in repeat play. So good hunting there!

So far I've lead Ciara into a few less than fortunate fates, guess I'm not the best adventure lol
But MR you've crafted such a descriptive adventure You also do quite a good job of giving Ciara's inner thoughts and reflections on her father, life, and thinking about the other victims she's encountered. Her lamenting the loss of the waitress being my favorite I've found. I'll mess with this some more of course (got to see if I can not die lol)
Thanks for the shoutout sir, glad I could help a little bit.

Your help was very good, especially at a time when I despaired of this ever being completed. Now that it's finallly out in the light of day (well, relatively ), I wanted to give credit where credit was due.
Thank you so much for your kinds words -- I'm especially glad that the character-building stuff worked for you. I was really unsure if it would work in the CYOA format, since that's not really something this story type is known for, but as you know I am always a fan of character and character development. If I can still advance a character's arc, even if I can't be sure which path they'll use to get to the end, I'll have succeeded
Keep at it, and I have no doubt you can see Ciara through to one of the winning conclusions
I should mention that you've more than earned a Second Tier reward, for the inclusion of an OC in the next dungeon adventure! I'll update about rewards in a bit, but in the meantime if you want to let me know who you'd like featured, go for it!
