Description Today I made a Preying Mantis out of paper. I am really happy with how he came out. I know a lot of people would disagree but I think they are the cutest bugs. I love how they watch you.

I'd like to do a series of paper bugs as a way to let off some steam.

I like your creation but the real thing is a bit scary to handle

I had a mantis for about six months. I fed him pretty much anything. I remember an epic battle with the wurm I fed him. Now he's gone for about 3 years but these animals are pretty amazing.

Awesome! I think they're really cute, too. But they don't live around here, so I've never actually seen one 'live'.

Oh man they will watch you when you walk by and they can get really big. I guess they could be considered gross if I didn't think they were so cool.

I totaly agree! I used to have a pet praying mantis called Mushu. I raised him from a teeny baby ; 3 ; He was so cute.... he hated me though XD

That is kind of amazing. I have never heard of anyone keeping a Praying Mantis as a pet before. I'll bet he was a viscous little guy.
I just see them in my garden, my mom has a real eye for seeing cool bugs. I can understand why some people are freaked out by them but they are way too interesting for that.

It was a great time :3 I learnt a lot of responsibility while taking care of Mushu! When he was teeny ( about <--> that big), I had to catch tiny flies for him to eat! It was awesome to see him grow xD Eventually he was eating crickets bought from the pet shop He ended up being about <----------------------------------------> big

It's a sad story for him though. My friend saw someone selling a bunch of baby mantis on Ebay (which is wrong) and he wanted to rescue them so he bought them. The guy who sent them was a complete idiot. He sent them in a plastic cup with wet glue at the bottom (to hold a wet cotton bud, which assume was their water source). MOST of the baby mantis were stuck to the glue and died ... It was so sad. We only managed to rescue three and we were so angry at that man. We each took one to look after, but sadder still Mushu was the only one that survived to adulthood...

It was so shocking and so so upsetting to discover how those mantis were treated! People should have more respect for animals! Needless to say, we immedietly reported that man.

Mushu had a good life - he was my baby

Wow that is a interesting story. How did you end up finding baby mantises on Ebay? I'm glad at least one made it though.

I'm not sure how my friend found it exactly - I think he just looked up the species name :S Thankfully I think Ebay have clamped down on that sort of thing!

You definitely should do a whole series of paper bugs. Or paper anything, really

Did you work off a template or did you design everything from scratch?

I am currently working on a cut and fold diorama scene, which given my current pace will be finished around 2019.

I never thought of praying mantises as cute, but I always thought of then as really cool.

Thank you for sharing!

As far as a template I made a mock up bug first and kept the sheet I cut the shapes from as a template for the final one. Modifying any cuts that needed it. I guess that counts as from scratch. lol

Good luck with your paper diorama I would love to see it when you are finished!

Whoa! Awesome! I would disagree with you on the cute factor, but still, very cool! How long did it take you to make? Did you cut and glue?
And go for the series! That'd be pretty neat.

Aww but I find little baby mantises in my garden all the time and they watch you when you walk by.

This guy only took a day. I had to make a mock-up as well who wasn't nearly as steady on his tiny little bug legs. I want to make boxes for them as well so I can display them on a wall.

I think I am going to make a moth next. Or a beetle. I have this gold leaf that I want to try on a few of them.
