Description
When: March 20, 2018
Where: Zoo Veldhoven, The Netherlands
Visiting this zoo made me aware of the fact that, even though some birds may seem the same, they're actually not. Who knew there was more than one kind of Crowned Pigeon? I didn't, till I noticed the fans on the head were different Learned something new when researching this specific bird I'd photographed - there are a lot of different Crowned Pigeon which can be set apart by slight differences in appearances.
Species: Sclater’s Crowned Pigeon (Sclaters kroonduif)
Latin name: Goura Sclaterii
Originates from the southern lowland forests of New Guinea.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…For a long time, the Sclater’s and Scheepmaker’s Crowned Pigeon wre thought to be one and the same species: the Southern Crowned Pigeon.
…The Goura genus is very similar in looks, but can be set apart by the small details in each appearances. The Sclater’s Crowned Pigeon is closest related to the Western Crowned Pigeon.

I love how the head dress feathers look like they are woven together.
