The zoo staff memeber accompanying us - who'd also wandered around many times taking photos - had not been lucky photographing the Beaded Lizards. But when we visited, he was a in a mood - a mood to show off!

Species: Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizard (Mexicaanse korsthagedis)

Latin name: Heloderma [Horridum] Exasperatum

Originates from Mexico.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

… Beaded Lizards are, together with the Gila Monster, the only Lizard known to have evolved overt venom delivery system. However, since they primarily feed on eggs, it is not entirely clear to scientists how they use their venom.

…Beaded Lizards are mainly researched for pharmacological use of their venom.

…Although listed as “Least Concern”, Beaded Lizards are a CITES protected species as they’re threatened through their range by overcollection and habitat loss.

…In their native range, Beaded Lizards are subjects and victim to a lot of superstition, causing locals to often kill them on sight.
