Description Photo taken in August, 2016 @ ZieZoo Volkel, The Netherlands

Here's the companion to Chasing Tails ; the young Serval intent on catching his parent's tail. Though the adult was content to let the little kitten play, at one point he got distracted and got up. Much to the dismay of the kitten - no more plaything

Species: Serval

Latin name: Leptailurus Serval

Originiates from Africa.

Current status: Least Concern

 Did you know:

…DNA studies have shown that the Serval is closely related to the African Wild Cat, and the Caracal.

…Its long legs make it able for the Serval to achieve a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

…The white spots on the back of the Serval’s ears are called “ocelli” and are used to signal kittens when hunting.

Oh, my... are you telling me these servals literally have "eyes at the back of their heads"?

Yup, pretty much
Most wild cats do, I believe - Lions and Tigers, too

I've never noticed that before! I guess I don't want to get anywhere close enough to them to see the eyes on the back of their heads!

Haha, they often won't turn around for me, so I'm left just staring at the backs of their head
Never all that close, though of course, zoos do help overcome a bit of the distance, but a lot through the camera lens

Camera lens can be quite a life-saver. It's important to keep some distance from this big cats!
But thanks for letting me know about these ocelli on their ear tufts. That's a neat thing to learn!
