Description When: October 21, 2018
Where: Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands

It's becoming so hard to tell which one are the pups we watched grow up, and which are the parents
With such a grown-up face, I'm leaning more towards an adult, and it's have to be Jumper with that amount of white on the chest. The girls simply have very different faces.
Could still be a pup though - it's amazing how quick they've grown up.

Species: Ussuri or Chinese Dhole (Aziatische wilde of rode hond)

Latin name: Cuon Alpinus Alpinus

Originates from East Asia.

Current status: Endangered

Did you know:

…They’re also called Asiatic Wild Dog, Indian Wild Dog, Whistling Dog, Red Dog and Mountain Wolf. This specific Ussuri or Chinese Dhole, is also known as the Eastern Asiatic Dhole.

…Known to make a whistling sound resembling that of Red Foxes, sometimes rendered as coo-coo, it is unknown how they produce the sound but it is thought it coordinates the clan when traveling through thick brush.

…Dholes are highly social animals, and live in large clans withour rigid dominance hierarchies, containing multiple breeding females. These clans usually consist of 12 individuals, but clans of 40 are also known.

…They are able to jump 7 ft/ 2 meters straight up into the air.

…They suffer many threats to their survival in the wild, such as habitat loss, loss of prey, competition with other species, persecution due to livestock predation, but also disease transfer from domestic dogs. Their numbers are estimated at lower than 2,500 individuals and decreasing.

Such a wise and intense expression. I haven't had the privilege of witnessing one like this, although we do have foxes around here that certainly look similar. Beautiful shot.

Thanks!

I love all their moods, but the intensity from this profile shot is really nice

Aah, I've always wished the USA had a website where you could look up the collection of animals for each zoo, like we have here in Europe. I'd have put together a travel itinerary a long time ago

I don't know if Dholes are common in American zoos. But I do know you do have some foxes - also in the wild! - that I'd love to see

Thank you

When they're not in a mood to play, they're quite serene

Haha, it's mostly from the front where you can see their truly playful nature From the side, it's all serious contemplation. Kind of like that hair-do, "serious in front, party in the back" only from the front and side

Thanks The sun really was perfect that day, a bit harsh but nice for some photos

Thanks!

It's really unfair how fast they grow... But when we visited last weekend, I could still tell some of the faces apart from up close
