Description

When: October 9, 2019

Where: Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Asiatic Lions - at least the ones we've seen have - have rather slouchy facial features This is the mother of the female triplets who were about a year old at this point, and she was the youngest female adult as well. She looks older than her years, but of course, she does have three kids going through the same stages at the same time

Species: Asiatic Lion (Aziatische of Perzische leeuw)

Latin name: Panthera Leo Leo syn. Panthera Leo Persica

Originates from the Gir National Park and environs in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Current status: Endangered

Did you know:

…The Asiatic Lion was once also known as the Indian Lion and the Persian Lion.

…Male Asiatic Lions have only moderate mane growth at the top of their head, so that their ears are always visible. The mane is scanty on the cheeks and throat where it is only 10 cm/3.9 in long. All in all, the mane is less developed than in African Lions, and does not extend to below the belly, sides or ulnas.

…The most striking morphological character in Asiatic Lions is a longitudinal fold of skin running along its belly.

…An Asiatic Lion pride consists either of males, or of females and their cubs. The two sexes barely associate – only for a few days for mating – but rarely travel or feed together.

…Because the Asiatic Lion lives as a single subpopulation, they are vulnerable to unpredictable events threatening their survival.
