The Margays are residents of one of the oldest parts of the zoo - during the forced time spent closed due to COVID-19, the zoo has made some changes to the enclosures and we're curious to see it again.

Anyone who's previously visited the zoo, knows it's incredibily difficult to photograph the Margays, and even more so to photograph them well. We are so happy with our Dad's camera, which deals well with bad lighting circumstances allowing us to take a good photo after so many years

Perhaps a next visit will prove it even easier to take good photos - we'll have to wait and see

Latin name: Leopardus Wiedii

Originates from the Americas.

Current status: Near Threatened

Did you know:

…The Margay looks very similar to an Ocelot – their head is shorter, the eyes larger, and the tails and legs longer. Most notably are their climbing skills, which has resulted in them sometimes being referred to as “Tree Ocelot”.

…They are one of few Cats who possess the ankle flexibility to climb down trees head-first.

…Until the 1990s, Margays were illegally hunted for the wildlife trade leading to a serious depletion of their population.

…Female Margays have only two teats, and give birth to one kitten per litter – very rarely, there are two. There’s a 50% mortality rate amongst kittens, and have difficulty breeding in captivity, making the prospect of increasing their population very troublesome.
