Description Photo taken in August, 2016 @ ZieZoo Volkel, The Netherlands

The Spotted Hyenas have really grown comfortable in their new enclosure. They all know the perfect spots to lounge in and fall asleep, and also, those places perfect to kind of hide from visitors Always a good place for them to have.
Here, the grass is still rather vibrantly green, and this one was kind of in between sleep and awake. He'd try and lay down his head a few times, but every time, something would pique his interest and he'd get distracted again.
I love these mid-yawn kind of photos - those scrunchy faces and tongues are a lot more fun with animals than people

Species: Spotted or Laughing Hyena (Gevlekte of lachende hyena)

Latin name: Crocuta Crocuta

Originates from Africa.

Current status: Least Concern

 Did you know:

…The female Spotted Hyena has a pseudo-penis, making it hard to determine by looking at it whether it’s a male or female.

…It is the only mammalian species to lack an external vaginal opening.

…It counts as the most social of the Carnivora, meaning that it has the largest group sizes and most complex social behaviors, with a matriarchal hierarchy.

The thing about this zoo is that, for some reason, a lot of the animals - even the normally skittish ones - don't act like you'd expect them to.
They are very curious and inquisitive, and these Hyenas, especially in their former enclosure, really loved coming close.
Kind of unnerving, as at times you get rather close to the enclosure and they didn't much care for the wiring and would try to press their nose through the fence

A lot of people think Hyenas are more canine but they're actually more closely related to felines than canines, or so I've heard. Great shot and beautiful Hyena!

Oh wow, I did know they're not as close to canine and we tend to think, but the connection to felines is an interesting one. I'm coming to keep an eye out on any similarities, next time I visit

Thank you

Haha, can't tell like this if it's a lassie or lad But one thing's for sure, he/she's pretty awesome

Hahaha This is such a great capture I love it! Instead of the yawn
You could say he took a bite or sniff of something disgusting
and is saying YUK!

Haha, yeah, now that you mention, I've seen my cat pull that face a few times
Especially when she thought she'd get a good lick in and instead, got a mouth full of fluff from my sweater or blanket

They really can be Most of them have scars on their shoulders, but when they're lounging like this, yawning and on the brink of lying down for a nap... It's hard to see them as the carnivores they are

This is just natural

When they sleep, they look peaceful.

The human is also a predator

Talking about a "laughing hyena"!
It looks like you've caught one laughing at just the right moment.

Sometimes I feel like the feminists should adopt the hyenas as their spirit animal. They form a complex and highly social group with a matriarchy where even the lowest of females still rank higher than the male. But I guess the pseudo-penis drives a lot of people off! (That, or they don't want to be associated with the crazy hyenas in Disney's "the Lion King".

Haha, it does kind of look like that Though they were laughing a little before that, it seemed as if they'd gotten tired and he's actually yawning

I think media has a huge impact on how we view certain things - especially nature, and animals. When an animal has been portrayed as the bad guy, immoral or disgusting, it tends to stick with people - no matter if that view is actually wrong.
Personally I do think Hyenas are underrated; seeing the family they have here, you can't not be taken in by those big, soulful eyes They just seem so sweet! Of course they can be a bit agressive, but it must be so surprising to a lot of people to hear how their hierarchy system works. Not many people are aware of the high stature of females, kind of like with African Wild Dogs, too.

I doubt a lot of people know about the pseudo-penis When you look at them, it can be hard to miss, but I've noticed most people don't bother to look all that close

Well... yawning, laughing... they can look pretty similar after all. Especially if it's just a snap shot from a photograph, right?

I agree with you, hyenas are completely under-rated. In fact, a lot of animals are under-rated because of exactly what you are talking about. We have a lot of preconceived notions about certain animals because of the lore and history that surround them - which may or may not be true. And it's usually the  bad ones that stick with people. (I mean, just look at the poor vultures... The Tibetans believe vultures are messengers from the Gods what will come to take the soul of the deceased into the afterlife. And we are stuck with the mental image of these birds being macabre scavengers that throw up everywhere...

The rise of the Internet has given some "animal facts" a lot of coverage, for better or worse. The hyena's pseudo-penis happens to be one of those things people like to repeat time and again as if everyone should try to take a peek behind the lady hyena's legs. I don't understand what the fascination is all about. There are a lot of better things to learn in the world!

Why is the deviation called Sands of Time?  That does not have anything to do with hyenas!

Over the past 5 years, I've submitted so many photos that it's gotten pretty difficult to think of new, original titles for photos. These days, I browse through music artists' discography and when I come across something that fits, I go with that.
This hyena is yawning, which reminds me of sleeping, and Sands of Time reminded me of the little sandman who trickles sleep dust in your eyes. Hence the title
