Description

When: November 27, 2019

Where: Natuurpark De Wieden, The Netherlands

I took part in a volunteer project, and visited different nature reserves across the country. The employee in charge of the volunteers where we set to park, pointed out this Great Spotted Woodpecker all the way up in a tree It was the first time seeing one so well.

Species: Great Spotted Woodpecker (Grote bonte specht)

Latin name: Dendrocopus Major

Originates from across the Palearctic including parts of North Africa.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

…Great Spotted Woodpeckers chisel into trees both to find food and to excavate nest holes. They also drum for contact and territorial advertisement.

…Like other Woodpeckers, the Great Spotted Woodpecker has anatomical adaptation to manage the physical stresses from the hammering actions.

…While mostly similar in looks, you can tell apart the male and female by the crimson patch on the nape only present in males.

Was wondering why the branches were so bare. November is a chilly time. You were lucky to see one.
