Description
When: June 18, 2018Where: Natura ARTIS Magistra Amsterdam, The Netherlands
It is so much fun sharing this photo of the Pygmy Marmoset baby after we visited the zoo again last Sunday and saw many more babies - twins, this time!
They are cute when they're still so young and small they only cling tightly to their parents, but when they're independently exploring they're a lot of fun too
Species: Pygmy Marmoset (Dwergzijdeaapje of Dwerg oeistiti)
Latin name: Cebuella Pygmaea
Originates from South America.
Current status: Least Concern

Thank you
I really do love it when the surroundings lend themselves for a more natural-looking shot. This baby was tiny enough to make it work

Lovely. Can you post some images that show how the animals are kept please. Lots of people are against zoos and it would be good to show where these picture of yours come from so people can judge better.
I see two sides, one is bringing animals to areas where people can observe and enjoy them. The other side is taking animals away from their natural habitat and many zoos just plonk them in cages where they are never free...
I do enjoy looking at your pictures very much...

Hm, I don't often take photos of where the animals are held because of the other people there and I tend to focus on the animal and they get lost in those sorts of photos...
I understand that people have issues with zoos, but to be honest, many of those complaints stem from sounds to me like misconceptions that stem from the 80s. Zoos have improved a lot from what I can tell - cages are pretty much disappearing though in some cases it's just the best way of ensuring the animals' safety and that of the visitors. I know that in the Netherlands they're constantly developing and improving with their eye on the future and modern way of looking at animals in zoos.
Here in the Netherlands animals are hardly ever handled by zoo keepers, and it's pretty uncommon for a zoo to step in and hand-rear a baby.
Animals are, in what I reckon is over 90% of animals currently in zoos, taken from the wild. If they are, they're often "ruined" by people or an injury. I know of zoos here, that release zoo-born animals into the wilds of Europe to replenish those populations which is very cool
I found a photo on the website of the zoo: www.artis.nl/nl/ontdek/verhale…
This is basically what it looks like - and it's 3 times that in length. The moment you step inside, you notice the temperature difference, because it's kept at a regular warm temp suiting to the animals' natural environment. These Pygmy Marmosets share the enclosure with a group of all-male Flying Foxes, two sloths, some small other monkey species, some tree shrews and iguanas.
There are volunteers that will help people spot an animal, but will also ensure people don't touch the anumal. The animals really do run the place.
