Description
This essay format is a guide for what has been getting me Excellence all year at NCEA Level 1 for the New Zealand curriculum. It is best suited for theme questions on films, novels and maybe poetry. I hope this helpsDescribe or explain about a something theme in the text. Explain why this theme is [important/interesting/good to study/why you learnt it from the text/ what points the author is making about humanity or society as a whole].
This is a broad opening statement. The last statement loosely related to the topic, but this sentence expands the idea and begins to make it more specific to what I actually want to talk about. This sentence is the clincher; it links the last two sentences to what I'm actually going to be talking about: The text and the author. The author used these techniques to appeal to the reader and introduce their ideas. The clever use of these techniques really shows that the opening statement is loosely connected and that this essay will answer the question.
This is the less important bit of the text that relates to the idea. By that last statement, I mean that the author used these specific techniques, such as symbolism, language or a visual/verbal technique to help support the idea. Quotes are useful in this bit, because a "quote" that is interweaved helps show your understanding of the text. As a character said in the text: "Quotes sound better when they're interweaved, but if it's an awkward one then you may as well stick it on the end of the sentence if it applies." Another more minor bit of what I just talked about is this, but both bits go together with what the author is saying. However, this idea isn't anything to do with the second part of the question until we look at our own lives. The author's purpose in showing us this idea and event in this manner is that they vaguely relate to the real world.
This is the part that is most relevant to the question. It is from this part of the text and clearly shows the idea. This part is so important that explaining the next bit will flesh out this paragraph very well. It relates to the idea because of "this", which is relevant because the author used these techniques. "This quote" is another example of this idea. The author's purpose in presenting the idea to us in this manner is to ask the readers to contemplate their own lives. When we look at our own lives, we can see that this text vaguely relates to reality and that this sentence answers the second part of the question.
Vaguely comparing reality to this text is what answers the second half of the question completely, as well as getting those Excellence marks you really want. We can look at this non-specific aspect of our everyday lives and see the theme coming into play. By this I mean that, in the environment I spend most of my day in, we can vaguely see events that relate to the theme somehow. Another example of this can be seen when we look at this clichΓ©d debate or news item. Everyone knows about this, so I don't have to tell you very much about it for you to see for yourself that the theme is relevant. The author of this text was very insightful when they wrote this, using their techniques very well to show the reader what I just said.
The author was a very talented writer who shows perceptive understanding in their text. They made clever use of techniques to illustrate the theme and their idea vaguely relates to society today. This essay answers both the first and the second halves of the question. My zinger of a closing line is that my broad opening statement actually is loosely related after all and (optional) something bad might happen if we don't heed it.

Wow, you have some really good ideas here. It's really interesting to hear what every teacher has to say on English essays 8D
I'm guessing that this is written specifically more for the short text and extended text, right? I mean, it's kind of hard to fit a film text into your format. I've found that if you link to wider society, put in your own thoughts, explain language techniques, you get a higher mark. (Although I always forget to do that... orz. I wish I got excellence every single time as well)
Anyways, I love your "cheat code", it's really helpful in many ways C: Good luck with your exams! *is going to fail English on Wednesday*

Yeah, you'd need to add quite a bit of your own stuff on visual techniques for a film text. Also, if you had two short texts, (like I do), then you'd have to add in a paragraph comparing each.
Good luck for your English too (: And good luck for Maths tomorrow! (Alternatively, I hope Maths went well, if you don't read this before then )

Oh yes, I forgot about those as well =3= I personally find short text a lot easier than extended text... it's just easier to quoteweave, I guess. Comparing them is easier as well.
Ahhh... I got the luck *u* Same goes for you, maths will be... just wow. (You'll probably get this later, though, so I hope you did well too). *I'm freaking out now...*

Nice one, you'll be saving the skins of 7th formers all over the country!
And it will confuse the crap out of the moderators this year when everyone suddenly starts getting great marks

Heh, it kind of just goes to show that all they're looking at is your ability to retain information and present it in a certain way... but hey, excellence marks look great on a CV

Yeah. Looks nice in my brain too :3
But yeah... I kind of like writing essays because it takes so little effort. I don't have to revise for my first practice exam after these hols, 'cause it's English.
