Description
Our pills spill out of the bottle and we count them one last time before bed. The pills keep us safe. They suppress our instincts and we can lay in a bed together and pretend we are just like anyone else.
We can pretend that we don't shiver in the dark and that we're not afraid to not have a knife under the pillow. We can pretend that we wouldn't rather wake up with crimson hands from the bloody battles of our dreams and that the pills are something innocent.
We can pretend that the pills are vitamins and we're not tired from nightmares, we're just iron-deficient. And the best thing about that lie is that it's almost a half-truth; iron runs in the blood and we lost too much before we became "sane".
They want to erase me, but even pills can't do that, darling. It's human nature to survive, and if I must bring sanity gurgling up your oesophagus to do so, then we'll just smell bad in the morning. They yell at us when we do that, but they think they're only yelling at one of us and that it's for your own good and you'll like it so much more when you're sane.
So we'll kneel on the carpet and count them twice, then you'll fall asleep and I'll be glad I made us hide one this morning so you don't have enough.
'Cause deep down, you know we couldn't really live if we were whole.
