Description Alrighty, so I thought I'd share a little bit of how I paint the eyes and cutie marks on the ponies I make. This tutorial works along with the image i've posted and is numbered to reflect that.

1. Starting right off, I plan on showing you roughly how I painted the eye for a Fluttershy. these are the colours I used. The blue I use is called "Tropical Blue" and is available at Micheals for about a dollar a bottle. The white and black are simply plain.

2. These are simply extra peices of fabric I use to ge the eyes placed right. All you have to do is fold a peice of scrap in half, draw an oval about the size of the eye (it can always be adjusted later) with the purple vanishing marker, then cut it out, resulting in two peices roughly the same size and shape.

3. Fleece sticks to fleece relatively weel enough to place the ovals on the pony's head about where you'll want the eyes. I like to stick them to the head and move them around a little bit to make sure they are even with each other and in a good place on the head. Once your happy that the eyes are even when viewed from multiple angles, pin the placeholders on and trace around the edges (you may have to fudge it a bit to make the line smoothish) and then take the placeholds off.

4. Once you've gotten the oval traced so you know where the eye is going to be, draw one on. After you've drawn the first eye, look at the plush head-on and make little marks on the other oval with the purple marker so that the pupil lines match up, the iris lines match up, and finally that the eyeslid (in this case) begin and end at roughly the same spot on the eye.

5. Now do the same thing on a scrap peice of fleece, preferrably from the plush your making now. Draw the same eye the exact same way you did on her head. Then take a very small amount of black paint and very lightly and slowly outline the areas which will either be black or filled with black. You'll have to get a little bit of paint at a time, paint a little of the line, get a little bit of paint, and so on. I suggest using a really fine tipped brush for this part. Anything fine and round. I've used flat brushes too, but I think the round brushes work a bit better.

6. Once you've gone all the way aroudn lightly, the fleece should be pressed down a little and you can now paint the outline. Using just slightly more paint at a time than when you did the outline, very slowly do a thicker outline of the area filled with black.

7. Fill that section in, using small globs of paint on the brush and sort of pushing into the fleece a bit. Sort of like stabbing down the poofs, thats how i like to think about it. Make sure to fill in the area fully, sometimes because fleece is fuzzy you may miss parts without meaning to, so I go back over everything once after i've already painted it in.

8. Repeat steps 5-7 for the other colours areas of the eye. outlining the iris with the iris colour(s), white part with white, etc.

9. Finally, with black go ahead and line the eyebrow. I save this for last so if you made a mistake along the top of her eye, you can use the eyebrow line to cover/fix it.

10. Add the white reflections to the pupil/iris area and call it good! now that you've done it once on a scrap, doing it on the plush will be just as easy!

After all that and the paint has been dry for about an hour, heat up your iron on medium heat with no steam. Then place a tea towel or something equally thin over the painted area and rub the iron over it until the surface of the paint is nice and smooth.

Does it make the fabric crunchy/hard/not soft?

When i did mine i actually used the plain jane paint from micheals. I hadnt used anything super high quiality but i would think as long as its acryllic and not oil or water based youd be good to go

LOL. I searched how to paint on fleece and the first thing that came up was Fluttershy! I was actually looking this up for a school project, I am making a Four Winds Hat, but I will keep this in mind for next time I make a pony plush :3
Thanks for making this, all I needed to know is if you can indeed use acrylics

Sweet! Going to use this to paint a hat! Once I start making the ponies, they will all have faces and cutiemarks without the need for embroidery, which is awesome

Ponies will start next week, so absolutely pics will be posted! Does the ironing set the paint enough so that if they do get wet the paint doesn't freak out?

I just ran a tester eye i painted a while back through a wash in the sink and it still looks fine. Dunno if i would put it in the washer though.

Absolutely! The technique works equally with everyone, that little purple vanishing marker makes anything possible, haha. I do the same thing to paint the cutie marks ^^
Happy painting!

woa, that's so cool! I would have never of thought to use acrylics. Question, please? Does the acrylics wash away or stay if the plush needs to be put in a washing machine?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mousenet In reply to Nora-Poo [2012-06-04 17:47:48 +0000 UTC]

well, practically speaking i would assume that the paint would stay, but I haven't tested that yet (even though i probably should have by now)
I do believe that once the acrylic is painted on, it more or less permanently "stains" the fabric. I did recently get a picture of the pony i made for my cousin Lily a little while back who has been washed and she looked ok, no chipping or peeling or anything like that, I just haven't personally tried it.

The main thing to remember is that acrylics dont come out of your clothes (i still have paint/smock/shirts that i use for painting that have been washed a number of times and the paint is /still/ there) and probably wont come out of a plush either. Just to be safe though I always tell people who buy them to clean them gently with a damp rag and just try to keep them clean so there isn't an issue with washing machines.
Thanks for your question! ^^ and your compliment! I'll be reworking this tutorial soon and hopefully getting back on this pony-making horse (pun intended, lol)
