well i think i have to improve my crosshatching a lot yet, but i think i'm better than some time ago lol
i'm practicing it hard lately, but when i'm started to use this technique, it was like you said too, everyone looks like have dirty faces... in fact, they look like covered with mud lol
my advice to you is to not give up with cross hatching, practice some more, until you get used with it, and start to achieve the effects that you want
