Description Not finished yet, I need to finish making the flight mode, leg transformation and sword transformation, and pilot.

Well, final version of Stratus. Front and back view. It's pretty much as realistic as I want this mech to get. Seriously, I've gone through 5 versions of this mech, and I'm finally happy with it. Future concept art that I want to include Stratus with, will pretty much follow this design. This gives me a good back and front look of stratus so I can follow it's design closely in my future concept art of Windrider.

Anywayz, to kick my own butt, please check out this 2007 version of stratus. It's a piece of crap compared to the final version.

Certainly more realistic and conceptual more than before. by the way here's something you should know, many people actually think "as long as it looks gundamish then it's not original" and somehow it ended up with "as long as it doesn't look like gundam then it's original". Well my point is if that's what your mech need then don't be ashamed to have it, i've seen a person here who is so prideful of his original and always saying other is just copying to other but then ended up being just "not a gundam"

yeah you're right

But for me, breaking away from gundam designs is really just trying to break through the mindset of the designs. You know? For example, if I'm drawing a mecha head, somehow I can only imagine that it has 2 eyes, a tiara, a pointy chin, and a triangular-ish face. It's basically my attempt to have more versatility of design, so I try to avoid the gundam theme as much as possible.

But you're right, and I shouldn't be ashamed if it looks like Gundams, they're all just mech designs

well to be precise........ most ppl only know Gundam. Especially the younger viewers. They only know them 'Gundams' cause thats is the only mecha anime they ever watched. Probably code gease too, but i dont blame them if they go ' OH It looks like a gundam'.

But there no harm in experimenting more radical design. Take for example ZOE 2nd runner Vic Viper. Transformable, stylish and powerful and features it own unique look that is original to the mech.

IF you really wanna try breaking off normal mech design, an advise i can give you is to experiment with non humanoid design. You will learn tons there along the way and how to improve on parts and implementing different variations of part to work with other parts in design aspects.

Yeah this version is much more realistic. I kept the good parts of the old versions and improved on the overall design. I especially like the head now, it doesn't look too gundam-ish anymore

Remember that redoing a style entirely is not always be best way to go, espeically when it comes to updating older art. You can easily take an older concept update it and still keep within the same general theme of course being able to iterate more designs from something more basic is a good skill to have none the less as there are tough customers out there that wants to have what you already worked on but want something different about it.

Have you tried maybe another style design of the same old mech maybe something closer to its original? I mean it could have been a popular design back in its day and the enemies might have stolen and improved on it in thier own way and style.

Well, every time I redesign my mechs, I try to move away from the style that inspired previous designs. But um, my reason for drawing the same mech over and over has nothing to do with the timeline of the story or anything. Stratus, at this point, is basically a concept which I can try different designs and styles on. The versions have no significance by themselves other than being "practice runs" for me until I come up with a satisfactory one.

thats understandable but always try to be flexible with your styles if you plan on going into the industry, your style may not exactly fit the employers taste but slight modifications or expanding a mantra on even a smaller part style to emcompass the rest of the design can mean the difference.

Keep up the good work though

the long thing is actually partially a shield, partially a machine gun, and it bends up parallel to the body when it's in flight form to help with reducing air resistance. I'm planning to include the flight form in the final version of the concept drawing

Thanks . Well not above the head, just parallel to the head. You'll see when I draw the flight mode.
