Description I've got a 2000 word essay due tomorrow, so what is it I spend my time doing? Well a model of EVA unit 03 initially (still need some white paint to finalise that one), and further work on this!

I bought some tubing a while back, finally got around to attaching him together. Fairly sturdy, and still poseable. (I can fairly easily get him balancing on 1 foot, which I was pretty happy with).
Now just to paint him. It'll be interesting to try and get the feeling of Ashley Wood's style in 3d form...
with my own tweaks, of course.

(plasticard, and pieces of tank + mecha model kits. so handy that they always have bits left over...)

EDIT. added another pose to show it off . . . (the others all are pretty similar, after all)

This model looks tight! I first stumbled across the 18 inch figures from Wood's _World War Robot_ and have seen images from _PopBot_ but haven't read either yet. .. The robot's looking really good. How sturdy is your custom joint construction? Is there a lot of tension in the joints so it'll stand easily on its own (I see you noted that it will stand on one leg, and awesome achievement for a scratch built action figure!)

Recently, I've started working with polystyrene sheets combo'd with other misc parts (wood, plastic, plumber's puddy, sculpey firm) for custom figures I'm building for a web comic project.
…
I *was* going to ask if you would be open to contributing some concept art to my project, then I checked your profile page and saw you work at Blizzard. Never mind, not that I wouldn't like to have you, but I don't have the scratch to pay you. Me and two (writer) friends are doing this all gratis (but I have a merchandise revenue model in mind, plan to try a KickStarter drive for production cash).

All that said, the model's really nice. Is this your first scratch built articulated robot model?

Looks like I've resurrected an old thread, hope that's cool.

The plasticard looks very versatile and malleable. I will have to get some and try it. Im just having another look at the image, just the way you have built this model and made it poseable is very impressive. Even the hand gun looks good.

So for the knee joints the white outside circular coverings, are they connecting to each other through the light brown disc between them? Well I don’t know, It looks like it from here. I’m just thinking how the joints are set up for movement

The hip joints look like some kind of weird ball joint attachment. It’s not white so im guessing its some sort of mech set up. It should be pretty strong cause the whole upper torso is balancing on a single black looking rod which is sticking out of the hip area.

Are you thinking of painting it up and texturing? If you are I’m real keen to see it when it’s done.

Keep up the good work.

Yep, that's exactly the way the knees are set up. It was easier with those ones because I didn't have to make the brown rings, they were re-used pieces, but with the elbows I had to create them from scratch.

This should hopefully clear the hip-section up a little better. I constructed the frame for it but there are three connecting pieces inside that are from a mech.

Thanks indeed. and as soon as I get some time and a clear day for the undercoating it'll get along nicely.

ah yes, that image does clear things up. the elbow section although from scratch when painted you wont be able to tell the difference between the hand made pieces and the mech bits in the rest of the model.

I really like this model. the proporstions are good for the style. Im just confused about the joints, how did you make it so that it is poseable? Ashley Wood's robots are so cool. plasticard? is that all the white bits on the model? is it easy to use?where can the buy the stuff?

Yep, the white bits are all plasticard; model + hobby shops should generally stock it in varying thicknesses and yep, it's pretty simple to get the hang of. The arm and leg joints are created with a ring of plastic (in the larger cases old tank wheels) attached to the top of the limb, and the lower section clamped around the outside with a bit through the middle. (That's not very clear, I'm sure, but the best I can think of at the moment). The other joints are leftover ball+socket sort of bits from other mecha models.

Thanks

well that's what the brief was so yes, I'd say that's pretty well done..
I'm at 500 at the moment but it's still just an outline.
Not too stressed though, which is nice.
At least it's not due at 9 tomorrow.
