Description SO! Bought a book of Alex Horley's work today, and got thoroughly inspired so here we are.
The whole thing took about 6 hours or so, but I must have spent at least as much (and probably a fair bit more) time on the girl as I did on the entire rest of the image, but in the end I'm pretty happy with her (as an aside, the only reason she's wearing clothing is because I've just discovered nipples are almost impossible to paint nicely).
Lots of looking at Frazetta and Bisley while doing this as well, so the influences are no coincidence
(thanks to Wolves in the Throne Room for the title, too, though it's not exactly a difficult one to've come up with separately)

Enjoy!
(here's the base drawing , for those who're interested)

Nice! I get a strong Frazetta vibe, which I'm sure has been intentional in Horley's art.

Wonderful the atmosphere and style are great! I really like the look of the forest-god/demon and the way that the bones seem to suggest more of a prehistoric or anyway nature-themed place than the stereotypical association of necromancy/demon worship that we find in fantasy. The earthy colors suggest a wild and savage theme even more.
Great poses, they really make me want to find out what the two are looking for XD

Stupendous and inspiring piece of work, definitely one of my favorites from your gallery

I'm really feelin the expressive brush strokes on this my friend. Look forward to seeing more fascinating work! I agree, there are many challenges in drawing and painting women in my opinion, but once you get the hang of it it starts lookin fantastic, and you've done a great job here.

Nice, Bisley and Frazetta indeed. If you're looking for some figure drawing locally there is a great place in Santa Ana artists district called Courbet Art Circle. They have uninstructed nights Tuesday, Thur and Sat. I usually go on Tue or Thur. [link] and one of my favorite cafes is real close: The Gypsy Den (there'e one in Costa Mesa also) great artsy vibe.

Or the Laguna Canyon School Saturdays
[link] I've never been to that one.

Rock on!

Talking about practice...about how much did you use to paint before working professionaly ? and when did you start ? .
Yes I know , I am very curious ^^

oh and I just noticed....YOU ARE 22 ?! ?! . WTF man ? 22 and working for blizzard. Now I shall hate you hahah.
Seriously I'm 18 and still studying in a really , really bad school and painting ugly stuff.
Talking about school , are you self taught ? any hints on a good school ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Exphrasis [2010-01-06 13:33:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm afraid it pretty much is self-taught, yeah, so art school advice is definitely not something I'm particularly well-equipped to give out; it always depends on how motivated a person you are and the sort of work and school you end up doing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Exphrasis In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-01-06 17:44:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh alright. Sounds good to me. The thing is I'm forced to go to a school...
So I guess you didn't do any art school ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Exphrasis [2010-01-07 06:18:55 +0000 UTC]

I did a Visual Communication (graphic design ) degree after high school, yeah; well if you have to do it I guess then just make the most of it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Exphrasis In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-01-07 11:19:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh okay . Interesting. I'm doing something really boring here and not linked to concept art at all...there's nothing linked to it in france. It's really sad. I'm doing something linked to logos and advertising Oo haha.
Next year I'm thinking of doing a 3D school,it's less than 5 hours a day , so I can practice my painting all the rest of the day and have a good level in 3D as well . Do you think it is a good plan ? Oh and also, do you only do concept art for blizzard , or do you have to do modelling too for example when all the concept art is done ? is 3D a good thing to enter blizzard ? . You know ...If I can do something that helps me get there faster and improve my self, I'll run for it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Exphrasis [2010-01-14 06:46:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, 3d is definitely a good skill to have; I don't do that much of it in my position, but they (and most companies) have a lot more 3d artists than straight 2d artists, so having knowledge there immediately makes you more hireable

Sounds like a good idea, then.
Good luck!

Really great . I'll do that then .

Thanks a lot

Do you think you would have some time one day to give me a really quick critique about my work ? . I have asked you a lot already I know , I'll understand if you don't have the time . A few of us do !! .

Take care !

Hi. This is very good. I would really like to see how you work with this style of painting. I was always amazed by pieces like this looking so natural, giving a feel of real paint, and brush flow. I was always a draughtsman type , and I really need to work on my color. Could you make speedpainting movie or something like that? Not accelerated too much so I could see your way of using tools etc to learn something. I would apriciate it very much. Marvelous job! Im lookin forward to see more from you. Regards.
