Description
Last Raege comic for at least 4 deviations. I lost the script to the DH story for ages, but I've found it again. I think maybe I can get some of that done at long last.Oh, and have a nice day.

There's a minority on /tg/ that would vehemently disagree with that.

Easy enough to ignore on /tg/ too, with the right extension. A lot of people miss that. But sometimes a good thread can be turned to shit but the sort of person who would rather fuck up something other people enjoy than create or do something themselves. It's a mindset I will never appreciate or understand. It's so pathetic it can make your head hurt.

Ledhed, an ork character I am scheming up, has this as one of his principle personality traits

well it all started when his entire company was wiped out by Tau forces just because the Tau had alot better weapons then they did to him it was an insult cuz he saw it in a way that the bravery of his troops was wasted and it wasn't a battle but a complete massacre and his troops didn't die a soldier's death

She's the unit's little sister. The mascot. The one they protect. And at this stage, she is vital to Raeges on going function as commissar.

Touche'.
It's a dynamic I've often found stirring, but I had never seen it applied to the grimdark future of the 41st millennium. I figured that, a little comedy, a little feel good moments and some down home sci-fi violence makes for a bit of fun.

focusing on the characters and cultures that you, and the others, do is the key, I find. Finding some level of humanity in Chaos (kultist), cold hard edged humour (Dranon) and tension and storyline (Raege) all constrast their characters nicely but have a certian logical sense.
Commissars have always been ripe for parody and Fuklaw is a perfect example. The Angry Marines (and pretty marines? Who came up with that, is it even related?) are about all you can do with Space Marines as they're not very flexible.
Throwing any sort of sophistication or culture on orks and you have simple humour, but that's not going to be good for more than just a few one liners and ironic jokes.
The only 'dynamic' I've enjoyed in the DOW series was the battle between two morons, Gorgutz and Krull. The idea of an ork warboss outwitting a Chaos Lord was just too much to pass up.
you guys add some extra flare and flavour to already a deep and detailed genre

It's why I like the imperial guard so much. They're flexible. They're human. Most stories that feature the astartes (although I enjoyed Fulgrim) tend to bore me to tears.
I have been tempted to do an ork story but the unfortunate fact of the matter is that I don't enjoy drawing them much. Don't know why.
Good lord the chaos lord in DOW are a joke.
With Raege, past her initial concept of being like "the boss" to Fuklaw, I decide I wanted an old school Commissar. Not as furious and hairtrigger as Fuklaw, not as easy going and approachable as Gaunt (and lets face it, lucky) and not as lauded and dynamic as Cain.
Just another Commissar. Obscure. Withould heraldry, without statues. A commissar who believes in rousing speeches, battle hymns and an inspiring visage is more valuable trigger discipline. A political connector a commissar who thinks of the morale of her troops, not just of their willingness to charge.
Nothing exceptional. Nothing strange. Just a commissar. A simple, effective commissar.

The IG have that other approachable level that, if you took the average 40k fan and found their closest equivalent to a 40k character they would be indoctrinated into the Guard. The biggest hurdle for any science fiction or fantasy story is bridging the world of the fantastic while keeping the readers connected and emotionally involved in the story.
No one will ever care about how MUCH a space marine loves the Emperor. At best they're powerful and awe inspiring plot pieces. Individuals that rise above the norm solely on their personal qualities and determination are much more interesting.
Ork stories are hard to do. Deff Skwadron is the best published (was published) stuff out there but was basically 4 short stories about violence and carnage (and good stories they are!) Blood n Thunder was good, but about half of the artwork turned me right off. And who names an ork Skyva? And who names a Bloodaxe Warboss Gorgutz? Ugh. The only real quality that orks have is that they, well the interesting ones, have self-oriented goals. I like the idea of rogue ork mercenaries dancing a hair-thin line of survival amongst more (in their eyes) idiotic forces of eating (nids) religion (SM/Chaos) and servilitude (IG). Their meks are creative and I like that too. And they know how to have fun. Unfortunately, as far as finding any interesting human element, that's about it. They're, at their best, as deep as Tank Girl.
Your intentions of a simple and effective commissar with Raege work, but they work on another level. Because of that simple, basic mindset she seems to have a depth of vision or level of confidence or resolve above that of exaggerated characters (ie Fuklaw). I don't know if it was intended but to me it seemed obvious that she knew all about Boone's infatuation with her in your last post and manipulated the situation perfectly to keep her status of command and keep Boone emotionally sane. Of course, she could just be blissfully unaware of the entire thing and acting on a purely militaristic frame of mind.

When it comes to Raege, she may do what she does for the reasons you state, without being aware of it herself. There is a lot she doesn't admit to herself without realizing it. It's just her mindset. She has focused herself to ignore and forget the things she likes (certain musics, certain foods etc) for the sake of being a better leader and officer.
To that end, her psyker bodyguard knows her better than she knows herself, quite literally.
Or maybe she's just clueless. Who knows.
