Angela's clothing began to suddenly lengthen. The hem of her dress reached almost to the floor as the fabric wrapped tightly around her. She felt a draft at her feet as her boots opened up into a pair of sandals. Angela's dark hair began to twist itself into a small knot atop her head. As it did, she could feel her thoughts changing from English to an unfamiliar language. Her mind was a jumble as archaic Japanese was fast overtaking the strange Western syllables. This only sent Angela even deeper into confusion.

"[Why would I know I'm thinking in archaic Japanese?]" she said aloud anxiously, in a perfect 18th-century dialect. "[Who am I? What am I?]"

Angela struggled to remember her life in Pendleton and her subsequent transformation into a witch in Underborough. But the further she drifted from the girl she once was, the more she felt...

(1.) ...like a woman of Old Japan.

(2.) ...like something inhuman.
