Transformers are one race and species, they split into autobots and decepticons because of megtron's desire to rule over cybertron, and optimus, originally orion pax, a good friend of megatron, became a prime, and was sworn to protect the planet, because that's what primes do. Each had alliances with many other transformers, and each side formed because of the war, which destroyed their planet, forcing them to escape to earth, where the war continued, and the autobot's new goal was to protect the humans, no matter the cost.
