Description This is a digital painting, done completely from scratch in Photoshop CS3, using a Wacom Graphire tablet. If there is enough interest, I will post a progression of this, showing the initial sketch and progressing through to the completed piece.

I was initially going to wait and not post this until I had added color, but as I was adding colors to this last night, I felt that it should be posted in black and white since Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed in black and white. I will still add the colors and post the color version later, but for now this seemed appropriate as it is.

This piece is a tribute to actor Ben Chapman, who played the role of Creech in all of the "out of water" shots. Ben passed away recently (February 21st, 2008). I was planning to do a mural of the creature as a body paint prior to the news of Ben's death, but I wasn't able to get it finished. During my search for a good reference photo for that project, I started doing a sketch in Photoshop, and it grew into this painting.

Creature from the Black Lagoon is and likely always will be my all time favorite horror movie. I can watch it over and over and enjoy it every time!

Hope you all like this one- I was very happy with the way this one turned out!

Thanks for the fave, glad ya like this one! Creech is my all time favorite horror movie, and it was a ton of fun to paint this piece. I am planning on doing a traditional acrylic painting of him soon. I love doing digital work, but I am trying to get back into the traditional a little more as well. Thanks for stopping by to look at my work, I will have to spend some time checking out your gallery as well- it looked cool from what I saw so far!!

Thanks Ben- glad to know you like this one!

How much are they asking for the Creature pieces there at your work?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GorillaEye In reply to Mr-Mordacious [2008-04-03 02:21:40 +0000 UTC]

hmmm i believe teh mask is in the udual 40 to 50 range the hands are like 30 something and the feet are 25, but like i said we have toe sell them together cuz what is the costume store gonna doo with extra sets of hands and fet to a harldy used monster.

like last year we ended up with a lot of Alien hands cuz of that, cuz the masks are cool for trophie cases, but because of the complexity of the creature as a deacent costume idea theres not much demand for other bitz and pieces. dig it?

very awesome work so far Patrick! it's looking very photo realistic with that blurred background! if i were to critique one teensy weensy thing, i'd make the eyes look more symmetrical. You can use photoshop's liquify filter to tweak his left eye (from our viewpoint) to match his right eye, which i might add is looking very shmexy with those reflections... i love how everything is looking like clay! very cool that you got it to look like that. srsly, it looks like clay with a glaze on it! @___@

coloring it is going to be soooo gratifying... trust me i know!

Mr-Mordacious In reply to blindsyte [2008-04-02 16:33:44 +0000 UTC]

Hey Nick! Thanks for the comments and the critique. I am not trying to be defensive about what you said, and I would normally agree, but that's how Creech's eyes look in the reference photo I was working from. Not symmetrical at all.

The coloring was coming along pretty well, but I felt like I had to post the black and white version since that was how it was filmed.
