great work, loving the detail, quick question, Ive got a HP Plus and I'm wanting to get hold of some body paints for the airbrush, any suggestions of some places online, preferably in the UK?

Mr-Mordacious In reply to flukeylukey [2010-01-25 16:34:20 +0000 UTC]

Not sure of a place that is specific to the UK, but I can tell you that I wouldn't spend a lot of money on expensive "body paints"- they are usually insanely priced for a tiny amount. I personally use Ben Nye cake makeups for the base makeup, then the detail work is done using Badger Air Opaque water based paints, which cost about $4 for a bottle, and go a LONG way. I imagine you can find those paints by doing a search on google, I typically buy mine from a local art supply store. Good luck!!

Your work is stunning.

But, please do not recommend craft paint for body paint.

As body painters, we're making health decisions for ANOTHER human being - and that decision shouldn't be based on penny pinching $4/oz Craft Paint vs. $5/oz Cosmetic grade airbrush Body Paint.

NON TOXIC. It was not soley based on being cheap- I would be insane to use anything harmful when it comes to body paint.

NOT CRAFT paint either. Badger water based paint. Big difference.

Battledress In reply to Mr-Mordacious [2011-07-25 17:31:01 +0000 UTC]

Badger water based paint is a craft/artist paint that does not use cosmetic grade ingredients.
Non-Toxic is not makeup - and this is a big point of education for me.

Your artwork is incredible - but there is so much mis-education out there about what really is safe for long-term skin exposure and what is non-toxic, meaning it won't kill you if you eat it

Mr-Mordacious In reply to Battledress [2011-07-26 00:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Are there reports out there that have proven the water based paint to be harmful? I am not trying to be an ass, and I am very concerned with being careful about what I use, but I have never heard anyone in the makeup industry talk about water based paint being harmful.

When you say long term exposure, what time frame are you talking about? Thanks for the info, let me know more.

Smart, intelligent questions…

As artists, we often use crazy, non-traditional methods and materials to get the look we're going for. The issue is that we need to protect our models from the unnecessary risks under our direct control.

Every time we choose a product to apply, WE are making a healthcare decision for ANOTHER human being.

Yes, there have been reports where water based and other non-cosmetic paint has proven to be harmful to models. Reactions have ranged from rashes to scaring and hospitalization. True, these events are rare, but it goes to the reason why body painters and makeup artists have to be so careful.

Craft and artists paints have ingredients like adhesion promoters and binders that make the paint stick β€œto most any surface”. Do we want to show our models the same care and consideration as we would β€œglass, metal or wood” – or are they better than that?

These paint products also have access to huge selection of pigments – while very few pigments are actually approved for cosmetic use. And where another source of allergic reactions comes from. That’s why the artist’s color palette is so much greater than the body painter’s.

The makeup industry is full of discussion about safe and sanitary practices. We share horror stories about models who we’ve worked with who have been given everything from pink eye to herpes due to dirty makeup artists to full body rashes from bad product choices by body painters to chemical burns by botched special effects prosthetic applications. These are not urban legends – but first person accounts relayed by artists, models and photographers.

Skin is the largest organ on the body – and that skin respires. It sucks product into its pores as the body gets cold, it pushes product out of the pores as it gets hot and perspires – then repeats the process in an ongoing in-out exchange. Body paint models are subject to long amounts of time in makeup chairs then hot lights and activity on set. This is very different from the kid eating a crayon or paste or getting paint on his hands till Mommy washes it off. Our stomachs can take a lot more punishment than our skin.

For all these reasons, it is so important to make as responsible and considerate a choice as we can as body artists. True, the FDA is far from perfect, but it is the best standard available to say what is safe for the body. Even then, many cosmetic colors have stipulations as to where on the body the pigment is safe. For example, colors safe for the lips may not be approved for use around the eyes.

With all the reasonable precautions one can take, there will still be models with allergies to cosmetic ingredients and products like latex, spirit gum, aloe, gem adhesives, silicone preparation ingredients, certain red and blue pigments….

This is where education is so important.

Here is an earlier discussion on Non-Toxic is not Makeup:[link]
The article includes more links to the FDA, etc.

Did you use their clown white? Or was it a different colour?

Reason why I'm asking is because I want to be Emily from Corpse Bride for Halloween, and I remembered seeing your Christel Death pictures a while ago and thought it'd be a lot better to do make up than buying a ...kids skeleton costume...thing. Only problem is I don't have an air brush gun - But! I only have an arm and a leg to do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr-Mordacious In reply to goblintree [2009-10-21 17:47:37 +0000 UTC]

I never use clown white, the reason for that is clown white is a grease paint, so it would resist the water based black paint I use in my airbrush. I always use Ben Nye white cake makeup for the base. I am sure you can achieve some awesome results with a regular paintbrush too! Good luck and have fun!!

you know what?!
if you look closely at this zombie you find him sad. his expression proves something like human feelings and he's filled with sorrow 'cause he's heartless.
BUT if you squint your eyes details blur and you find him smiling devilishly that he has no heart to have regrets or any feeling that could stop him from killing you right away. he just shows you, that nothing can save you 'cause he doesn't care anymore...
WOW! I love it!!!
