After 8 seasons of this show being on the air, and after watching every single episode in it, I thought this show had already given the worst it could've ever offered, and that there would be no episode that would even come close to saying it made me quit watching the show entirely. Not Rainbow Falls, not No Second Prances, not The Mean Six, and not even Every Little Thing She Does had made me stop having respect for this show... until now.

Not only is this episode painful to watch, but I would call it one of the worst kids cartoon episodes I've seen in my life.

Let's find out why I think A Matter of Principals is not only the worst episode of Season 8... but the worst episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

It's about Twilight and her gang being summoned by the Map all at once. Not wanting to close down school, they enlist Starlight to become temporal Headmare while they're gone. However, Discord has made it his duty to jeopardize the school activities, and Starlight and Spike must figure out why he's acting that way...

So... the overall message of this episode is that you should be more open to listen to the ideas of others, because hearing their insight might help you overcome a challenge. The episode puts Starlight in the wrong for excluding Discord from the school's activites, and not listening to the ideas he has.

There's just one little problem with that idea... and is that Starlight has NO FUCKING REASON TO LISTEN TO HIM!!!

All throughout the episode Discord at his most obnoxious, smug, unlikeable, and quite frankly sociopathic he's ever been on the show. And yes, Discord has always been the kind of character who likes to cause mischief wherever he goes, but not to the point of endangering innocent bystanders' lives in the process. Even worse is that those bystanders in question are CHILDREN. Discord did put Twilight and Cadence in peril in Three's a Crowd, but at the very least a. that was when he wasn't completely reformed yet, and b. he did it to ponies he knows can fight back! Here, he does that to innocent creatures who are clearly terrified of what's happening, not even caring if one of them gets hurt or worse. I think VoiceOfReason puts it best: "There's being Discord, and then there's being a dick!"

And all of this because he wanted to be Headmaster of the School of Friendship? That's stupid!

Most of the jokes are based around Discord torturing either Starlight, Spike, or the student body. And like I mentioned before, it's not funny... in the slightest. There are some admittedly funny jokes, like Trixie talking on a bananaphone, and some nice interactions between the Student Six, it doesn't make up for how abhorrent Discord's behavior throughout the episode was.

But you want to know what the worst part of this? Its unintentional message. In the end, Starlight apologizes to Discord for not listening to him (even though she has no reason to), and to make up for her "misdeeds", she names him Vice-Headmare of the Friendship School. Basically saying that "if you throw a temper tantrum because you didn't get something you wanted, you won't be punished for it! In fact, you'll be rewarded for your bad behavior!"... NO.

Kids need to learn that their actions have consequences. You have to teach your children that bad behavior is not acceptable, and that throwing temper tantrums like that will do them no good. Otherwise they won't learn from their mistakes.

And yes, Twilight and her friends don't allow him to be Vice-Headmare for too long, but it really doesn't make up for it since 1. there's the fact that he willingly put Fluttershy in danger for his little mischief (something he would never, EVER do on purpose), and 2. he doesn't really get punished for his actions either. He gets away with what he does, and gets no punishment for his actions.

I would gladly tell you to not watch this episode... except you have to.

Aside from absolutely lackluster writing, one thing my least favorite episodes of the show (except maybe The Mean Six) have in common is that they are unskippable. Since they have certain elements that are crucial to their respective season's story arc. This episode introduces the six ancient artifacts from the different nations of Equestria that will be important in the season finale. So, I'm really sorry, but it's necessary to watch.

I honestly have never felt this much anger at a cartoon that I liked. The only other times that has happened to me are with SpongeBob Squarepants's A Pal For Gary and One Coarse Meal, and Fairly Odd Parents' Certifiable Super Sitter.

Sigh... honestly, like I've sayed before, I don't like doing negative reviews. But I feel it's important to help the creators improve on their craft. And it's episode's like this that make me thankful the show ended instead of dragging it out until it becomes The Simpsons.

As for this episode... it can get bent for all I care.
