Description

Somewhere far beyond the known world, in a vast and empty landscape, a sinister figure appears out of the mist, peers for a moment, and vanishes back from whence it came. A ghost, Rasret and Usut determine it must be, for no other living thing could endure this wicked land for long.

Rasret and Usut are sophonts from an alternate more habitable Mars during the late hesperian period. (More about them here:www.deviantart.com/mrantlear/a… ) When they left their home, the place which would later become the hellas basin, they had to traverse the surrounding highlands, and even though they did this during the time of martian summer on the southern hemisphere, they still had to traverse cold and harsh places.

In one of the harsh places they encounter a wanderstalk, likely a relative of this little fella (hardeshur.blogspot.com/2024/03… ).

Maybe they encounter it not in the southern highlands, but near the north pole, or any other highland, I don´t really know for sure.

I really like to imagine late hesperian har deshur (alternate mars) as a place similar to final stretch serina at 300 MPE. Both world expereince drying, cooling, declining of volcanism and plate tectonics and declining athmosphere pressure, because their magentic field weakens as their inner core cools out.

Fun fact, the inspiration (www.deviantart.com/sheather888… ) features a wanderwalker, a kind of Savage Gravedigger descendant, and this GIMP Drawing features a Wanderstalk, so the name is a pun!
