Wow! Is this model a real soldier?
Even though I cant see the face, I feel like there's a lot of expression here.

I really like the expression in your pose here! You can't see the facial expression, but you don't need to because your stance is so strong. You look all go-get-'em like an optimist, but there's an extra layer to the picture because of the gun and uniform. I love it when the title adds meaning!

I mean no offense by this, but I have to say that this picture only shows me play. how a child thinks something like that would be. I am a united states marine and I have seen conflict from it's raw state to death from afar using remote controls and digital screens. I have a body that it plagued with grotesque scares for conflict. I have brought death to my enemies and the enemies of the world in only a few ways. but what you are trying to portray is not some video game or fantasy. it is something warriors from around the world are living every second. the image that you are trying to portray would be better if you were wearing camies soaked in sweat with a slow crust of the salts from that sweat slowly moving in, body armor that has nicks and cuts from shrapnel and having to spend days moving through harsh terrain and fire fights, covered in a heavy layer of dust and sand. and your face should been shown covered in the same sand and dust with you're camouflage paint, smeared with half of it gone from an ambush that happened only hours ago while it was still dark outside. and the weapon must be covered in the same heavy dust and sand covered in scraps from all your movements. that would be the image that strikes true fear in the eyes of your enemy. a warrior that has been dragged through hell and back with the taste of death and revenge on his tongue and the barrel of his M16 pointing at his enemies body.
again I hope you do not take offense to my critique, I am only giving you the perspective of a man who knows first hand these things

Pearls before swine, brother. Unfortunately, few if any in the civilian world can even comprehend such experiences; much of the response that is given to vets like me and you is patronizing sympathy.
May I ask what unit you were with? I had a buddy in the Marines--died out by Camp Cobra in Afghanistan.
I'm with the 173rd ABCT, 1-503rd HHC (formerly Charlie Company).

I was with 2/3 golf company out in nowzad afghan. I was one of their engo attachments (busting doors in and clearing rooms with a metal detector in one hand and a 16 in my off hand) my parent command at the time was 3d combat assault battalion, combat engineer company 3rd plt (now 3d combat engineer battalion charlie company I believe). I'm currently with the wounded warrior battalion in camp lejeune waiting for medical retirement for my injures sustained in combat. and from one service member to another thank you for serving

This shot is so bloody amazing. The movement of the soldier is quite evident but it seems completely still at the same time.

I liked the contrast of the words and title with the picture. It dose make me wonder if you have the same thoughts about the two, as the people who come across it. if that even makes sense :/

I have to admit to finding amusement in the title of this one. I can't say that I equate battle gear to optimism but I have to concede the the most positive people I know are gun-toting rednecks.
I think my favorite thing about this picture would have to be the sand coming off the rifle and shoulder. It gives a sense of movement without being overly demonstrative.

I'd be pretty optimistic too if I had my AR-15 rigged like that. And God how I long for one of those ACU masks.

Go to Ranger Joes. [link] I bought a half-face and a balaclava mask from them for deplyoment.
The only downside is, some of their stuff is expensive, but high quality. The majority of their WILL last through something as punishing as deployment.

I'd love to see your process for your photos. To see how you come up with your ideas. To be a part of it. But, I also realize that these are yours for a reason. Your emotions are conveyed through your pictures, as an artist does with his brush or soldier with his rifle. Though I may never be a part of it, it never hurts to wish to work with such a man as yourself.

this is a beautiful picture...to me, it works perfectly with the quotes you left...there are many messages that could be seen in this pic, but the one that stands out to me is how intimidating you might look to whoever's at the business end of that barrel
on a side note, does it ever get pretty hot in there?
