Description Actually tho, Howl's Moving Castle book vs. Film thread🧵
(I compiled this from my own tweets so they may be a bit in jumble!)

Both are good and can be its own thing, but I feel like if you pick both, the overall experience is more interesting LOL
My memory is a bit foggy at parts but here goes!

From the get go, Sophie in the book has 2 younger sisters, Lettie and Martha instead of just Lettie. Lettie is from the same mother as Sophie's while Martha is born from Fanny, the step-mother (who's actually GOOD if a little obnoxious at times)

This sisters storyline becomes really interesting cuz the sisters were supposed to take different roles: Sophie inheriting the hat shop (she found out she can talk magic into hats and the business flourished), Lettie to work at the bakery+find a man to marry, and Martha to be a witch apprentice.

But Lettie and Martha didn't like this arrangement and Martha just went and grabbed some spells when she was an apprentice, came back and used the spell on her and Lettie so they looked like the other sister, and switched places.

Martha would end up meeting Michael (Markl) who, in the book, is still Howl's apprentice, but he's a teenager instead of a kid. He and Martha are in romantic relationship.

Meanwhile, Lettie was studying with the witch and met Howl (who went by alias of Mr.Oak. Dude LOVES his fake names. Pendragon and all)

Howl in the book is... a piece of work LOL I love him but also he needs some spanking like DUDE YOU FR?
He would go around flirting with girls and when they fall for him he would feel the commitment issue rises and he would flee💀

This part I'm a bit confused, but he had been trying to court Lettie but to no avail, and at some points he started asking about Sophie from Lettie instead? I think he realized Sophie is Lettie's sister at that point if I remember correctly.
Anyway, Lettie had a bf (or sort of) and he's... a DOG.

More clearly, he's a dogman. He got cursed by the Witch of the Waste (who in the book is...terrifying LMAO She be separating human parts, killing, and laying curses everywhere💀) He's called Percival by the way. He had to try really hard to change back to human and he could only do it for a very short period of time. Once that period ended he'd be another breed of dog instead.
At some point Lettie sent him to c*ckblock Howl from getting close to Sophie but she thought he was there so Howl can fix his curse despite being love rival😂

In the film, there are elements that kinda exist in the book but in different roles/details, like the dog (Percival vs. Heen), Turnip head, the black part of the doorknob (in the book it leads back to Howl's og hometown in Wales. HE ISEKAI TO INGARY MIND YOU???)

This part was kinda lucid trip for me cuz like, when I was a kid I definitely didn't catch on that he's actually someone from OUR world??? He wore a jacket called Welsh Rugby if I remember correctly😂 He went back to visit his family to get the lost spell paper back cuz it got lost when Sophie snooped around using the black side of the doorknob. He nephew got his English homework replaced by that spell and submitted it to his teacher😂

Howl then went to his nephew's teacher place to grab the spell back and FUCKIN FELL IN LOVE AGAIN???? Cuz the teacher is pretty😂

But he would later realize she's the Fire Demon that's in charge of The Witch of The Waste's heart and so on so forth. Near the ending things get really messy, this author's style is 💕

This kinda leads back to the dogman and Turnip scarecrow.

This part is hugely different from the film, and where my memory is the most confused, but it's kinda like this :
Prince Justin, the king's brother, and Wiard Sulliman, the royal wizard (not Madamn Sulliman in the film. Howl's teacher in the book is Mrs. Penstemmon who got killed by the Witch of The Waste after Howl and Sophie visit her before meeting the king)

So Wizard Sulliman got yoinked by The Witch of The Waste first, and Prince Justin went around looking for his bestie and got yoinked too. Let's say these two ended up in different pieces and in different places and those pieces go to : Howl's guitar, the skull in his castle, the dogman, Turnip head. The problem is I can never remember which parts go to what things but I'm sure these two got mixed together in so many objects💀

And what the Witch of the Waste kept was actually Prince Justin's headless body. She's waiting for either (or both) Howl's head and heart to make it the "complete human" and she could marry this chimera and become ✨The queen of Ingary✨

The famous sky walking scene in the film also exists in the book, just in different scenario and Howl looked dead inside ('cuz he was really sick+tired and looked haggard af) and Sophie was still old. This happens toward the end, after shattering The Witch of The Waste into dusts??? I 'm not sure what happened, but in short she's very dead, still her Fire Demon has her heart and WAS in the castle, so Howl and Sophie had to go back fast via walking on air.

The scene in the beginning of the film where Howl saved Sophie from the guards that pestered her? Kinda exists in the book, but HOWL WAS THE ONE PESTERING HER TILL SHE RAN OFF😂 She was super overworked at that point as the festival was shaking her up real good too.

The green slime scene is iconic in both the film and the book LMAO It's just that in the book Sophie is more pissed off than anything and there's no "I'm not beautiful" drama. His hair turned pink "like a bacon" as Howl said LOL

I think in the book his hair changed like 4 times? From blonde to pink, then to ginger, then to black (he dyed it black to go to his teacher's funeral, about this later), and to white near the end 'cuz of the curse (I LOVE the poems curses LOL)

Ok, so after The Witch of The Waste killed Howl's teacher, Howl was determined to attend her funeral. He dressed all in black (with hazards along the way as usual, plus he just transformed into a huge cat furry to fight the witch in the rain and caught a cold) then after Sophie and Michael protested that he's gonna get caught and killed by The Witch of The Waste out there he was like OK LET ME WEAR MY FURSUIT THEN and he copied the dogman's looks, transformed into a dog himself, and attended the funeral

Or maybe he fought her after the funeral? I'm a bit unclear about this. I need to reread it again soon LOL But he went extra miles to wear all black and transformed into a dog anyway and that's the point here😂
Speaking of the furry forms, in the film he transformed into this bird thing to fight in a war, which is HUGE part of the film, right? In the book the war was mentioned like, 5 sentences max. Then nothing more😂 Just the royal wizard and Prince Justin going missing were enough mess for the King already and he wasn't war crazed like in the film.

Sophie had to pretend to be Howl's mother in the book too, and he was trying to avoid commitment (as usual) I think he was trying to not get the royal wizard title (cuz they need someone to work in Sulliman's stead during his disappearance) and Howl wanted Sophie to act as his worrisome mother and reject the offer, while still maintain enough good relation so he can still get the commissions from the royal palace and stuff😂 She kinda got nervous and screwed it by saying Howl wants the king's daughter's hand in marriage if they want him to work as a royal wizard. And SHE'S LIKE A TODDLER???? 😂

Anyway because of this whole mess Howl was like YOU KNOW WHAT I'M RUNNING AWAY AGAIN and decided to move house LOL This is the part where they moved part of the castle to Sophie's old home and Howl tried to keep Sophie busy (so he could fixed all the other witch problems LMAO) by calling her whole family in to occupy her time😂 This sets the scene for the ending bit too cuz everyone is here and things just happen everywhere it's hilarious LOL

Also, I mentioned Sophie's magic in the book earlier. Her words are kinda magic?? Like she can talk magic into things. When she made hats and talked to them (cuz girl was so overworked and didn't have time to go anywhere💀) she imagined who would wear them and complimented them, which all those things come true. Like the hat she said "would marry into wealth" really led the wearer to marry rich man and stuff. So at the end Sophie could talk Calcifer back to life when she separated him from Howl's heart.

Speaking of Calcifer, I really like how the author wrote about his origin (and other Fire Demon origins to be fair) so they were shooting stars, but when they fell down, they would die. Calcifer didn't want to die, and young Howl was sorry for him and made a contract with him. This part links with the Shooting Star poems in the book SO WELL (it's part of the curses too) and tbh it makes a lot of sense Howl was so angry when he found out Michael and Sophie tried to catch a falling star without knowing what it could lead to.

Howl's whining in the book is so EXTRA??? Like dude is a drama queen and I love that for him LMAO Sophie was always on the verge of beating his ass and even the author was like "This dude, when he's fictional he's ok, don't go get your man like this readers" 😂

When he caught a cold he was like GOODBYE WORLD I'D DIE OF NEGLECT AND YOU ALL WOULD BE SORRY FOR ME😂 Love that. The romance in the book is a little confusing for me tho cuz WHEN? But ok there're so many other stuff happening I would let it slide LOL I love that in the film, there eventually is an explanation of why he likes her (the past Howl who caught and falling star, and Sophie who told him to wait for her in the future. That part IS SO GOOD)
In the book half the time he was trying to flirt with girls or getting chased by girls he ghosted (and her family) and The Witch of The Waste herself LMAO Dude is just💀 I think one of the reasoning is that he didn't have his heart back then but man it's bs LOL At least the sequels prove he can be a family man😂

I really like that in the book, during the period that he still had contract with Calcifer, his eyes are described as looking like glass marbles? Like pretty and clear but not like human eyes. Only after he got his heart back that his eyes looked human

By the way, the chicken feet of the castle in the film is definitely not based on the book and is Ghibli's design XD I LOVE IT! From an interview, DWJ (the author) said she LOVES the adaptation too, which is always a plus point from the og source material owner. Love her!

There are sequels which I also love. You can read them as standalone as well! The cast from Howl's Moving Castle does make an appearance, but you don't have to know them to read the other 2 books :3 (Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways)

But tbh from this author I really recommend The Chrestomanci series. I think it's just?? EVERYTHING??? The world building and characters are really interesting and refreshing. The MC(s) even has 9 lives🐈‍⬛ LITERALLY???? Many books from the series also touch on the subject of children's upbringing, problematic parental figures, and other goodies. And despite being labelled as children literature, I'm sure people of any age can enjoy.
Tbh both this series and Howl's Moving Castle trilogy have some dark shit I don't think are kids friendly💀

For now I think that's all I have to say about this. I need to reread again to refresh my memory, it's been a long time! There are more fun stuff in the book so if you guys are interested I recommend reading it! It's pretty short :3
If there's any point or details that I've missed or misunderstood, please just share the correct information in the reply! Do you guys have favorite scenes from the book or the film? Please let me know✨
