I really like the way it works. I'm excited to join the game once it comes up, and if the character choosing stays the same, I already know what my Cadet will look like! ^_^
All I would suggest, (if this is a beta and you want suggestions) is possibly being able to change the general color of your Cadet? And possibly add more items, because I love the ones you have here and would love to see what else we could play with.
