Description Awhile back, a few people mentioned they'd like to see how I go about actually drawing a pic. So for my most recent pic, I decided to do this. It took me a lot longer to get the sketch done, since I was stopping almost constantly to scan my progress, haha.

I normally HATE to let people see my sketches when they're in these phases. Because I'm never happy with it til it's finished, and if I'm not happy with it, I don't want anyone to see it.. Plus, I just don't like anyone to see it before its done. But I thought this might be a little fun.

I guess I could explain my thoughts about each stage..

1. I draw the head; in basically an egg shape. I try to draw it in the way I want the head to be tilted.
2. I draw those little "grid" lines, I guess you could call them; again, in the way that will show which way the head is tilted. Only in a past couple years did I start using this method. Of drawing the head shape first. For some reason I'd always hated the thought of doing it, but it REALLY helped in getting the angle of the head and placement of the facial features right.
3. The two characters are going to be so close together, I wanted to go ahead and get the second character in place, so that as I go on, I would know how to draw them around each other.
4. & 5. Started drawing out their bodies.. not much else to say about it~
6. You can see that I changed Kan's shoulder and arm.
7. Got their basic nude figures drawn out, so I started on their faces. I didn't quite know what to do with their lower bodies, and didn't really want all that in the pic anyway, so I just cut it out. You can see I put Kan's arm back the way it was before.
8. & 9. Adding Kan's details.
10. Pretty much done with Kan, so I started on Redstar.
11. & 12. Not much to say, just drawing in the details.
13. Finished the rough sketch~
Final: Did a new line art of it so that it'd be much nicer looking. Traced on another sheet of paper. Haha, YES, since it's all my own art, it's ok if I trace it. Riiiight??

Will scrap this soon.

good stuff...Duno worry about the tracing part ^_~ I know a few people who ink their stuff like that so they don't ruin the original sketchy.

Wow, you sketch pretty cleanly and on-track. Whenever I start sketching, I usually end up erasing more than actually drawing.

If you wouldn't mind a bit of critique, I'd say for future reference, maybe circles for heads isn't the best way to go. Right now, they're looking a bit small for the bodies, and the backs of the heads don't have the "roundness" they should. I'd suggest using the circle as a starting point, but adding a bottom curve for the jawline and a half-circle in the back to make a fuller-looking skull. I apologize ahead of time if that made absolutely no sense. >> ;

You're sketches are really neat and pretty!! I wish I had that drawing ability! For some reason I don't do those grid lines I just draw the head, eyes, nose, mouth, body, then hair all in that order. But my sketches are usually messy until I erase some parts to color over them or shade the whole thing. I can never draw the grids like you do >_< By the way this is great work I can't wait to see more!

This is amazing~! *w* I love seeing these things~~ They always make such interesting pictures~~ >w< And I really love how they progess~~ Seeing people's different skills is really incredible, too~~ You start off so nicely~ :3 I draw the eyes first~ *w* Maybe that's why my anatomy is always messed up, nah? Ajajaja~~

madam-marla [2007-09-04 18:34:38 +0000 UTC]

that is so cool. awesome that you map out anatomy from your first strokes. the arms look really nice and correct. I could never draw that without first drawing sticks to direct the bones. eh, maybe in time and with practice

Haha, thanks! I have trouble with just the opposite- I find that I can't draw sticks to direct the movement of the bones. X3

This must have taken twice the time as normal to scan it all in as you work! I love seeing the process, though, so thanks so much for sharing!
