Description It was getting towards the afternoon at the vicarage orchard, for more years than he could remember now, this had been home to Trevor the traction engine, now in the prime of his life, but still steaming and kicking, he and Jem Cole would find themselves occasionally trundling off to Market with a cart load of apples, each time coming back it would always be empty. It was a simple routine, but it had been one he had come to love, seeing children out in the sun enjoying themselves at the lake, or playing games in a field was much better than just seeing them seemingly all sit in a corner, lifeless while they stared silently into little rectangular things. True he had come to terms that times DO change, but was this really for the better? Ah well, he supposed it couldn't be helped. Children would do what they do.

Presently he approached the farm crossing. It was a simple arrangement, just a bit of solid concrete covered with dirt that allowed vehicles to cross the line, no guards were here as the crossing road led straight back into the orchard and nowhere else, so it wasn't exactly what you'd call busy... heck he was probably the only one to use this crossing safe for the sunday goers and the Vicar.

A shrill distant whistle broke the traction engine out of his train of thought. "Hold up, Trevor" Jem called to him. "Sounds like Edward's on his way down!" and with that, he closed what little regulator he had and Trevor came to a stop just clear of the up line. Then... silence. He looked around while he waited for the supposed train to come. Trevor took in the surroundings, he could see that the bees were in full buzziness. The lush green leaves on the trees swayed gently back and forth in the afternoon breeze.

Another shrill whistle, this time Trevor heard it properly and he was quite sure that wasn't Edwards whistle. Looking towards the source of the slowly approaching noise, he could JUST see far enough up the line to what was coming around the corner. The engine approaching was like nothing he had seen before... Small, tall funnel, painted black, shiney silvery side rods, enormous dome... Definitely not a regular that he knew of. As the engine drew closer with its train, Trevor could distinctly spot Edward behind the newcomer, he whistled a greeting as the train approached the reaction though, wasn't what he had expected. The little tank engine practically jumped off her axles in surprise, eyes wide directly at the at him, she looked as if someone had just popped a balloon right in her face! But a few seconds glancing at the old traction engine, her eyes softened in realization... a distinctly red blush of embarrassment dawned her cheeks as her eyes quickly went back to watching the rails for trouble. Edward however, returned the whistle gesture as they clanked by.

"So Tinkerbell... Might I ask where you come from?..." Edward tried breaking the metaphorical ice for the upteenth time that trip. He had allowed her to go up front so she could learn the route, if she ever needed to run the line while he was banking trains, but so far Edward had only succeeded in getting short responses out of the foreigner.

"I-... Somevhere very s-far away..." ....That wasn't very cryptic. He tried again.

"May I ask where?"

"I-I-.. I do nawt vint to say..."

"There's no need to be embarrassed about it... If you'd like to talk about it..." Edward was interrupted abruptly

"N-No Edvard.. I don't... Just...." She trailed off into murmurrs....

Edward sighed, it was quite clear that whatever happened to this engine, it had reduced her self esteem down to barely anything. "Very well Tinkerbell, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to, but if you ever do..." he paused "I'll happily hear you out..." In hindsight, he thought it was a bit over the top for an engine he had just met, but it was apparent she hadn't really made any friends... and she needed one...

Upfront, Tinkerbell couldn't believe it, this was an all British railway! Why weren't they sneering at her for being different? What did that stout gentleman see in her enough to bring her all the way here in the first place?! Why was this old engine being so nice to her? These questions and more flooded her smokebox and refused to budge, all were trying to force their way out of her mouth. None came though, this had been the way it had for years now, she wasn't sure what to make of it. Two words however did make it out of her mouth, along with a little smile, maybe it was doubt, maybe it was self assurance, maybe she'd like to think there WERE good people outside those 3 young boys and Mr. O'Connel... but whatever the case....

"T-thank you...."

Well was this really worth the weight?... Probably not. <_> Even now I dinna think my art or writing has really gotten anywhere, but a lot has happened in my life as of late and yet... I want to continue with this little series, just haven't really had a clue on where to take it. But thats all changed as of now, I now know how I'm going to end the Edward's branchline story arch, then we can move on from here. But when this story arch ends, where should she go from here?

But the idea behind this is that Tink does gradually becomes more confident.... Like a lot of things... give her time... and she'll show you just who she can be.

Right, thats all from me for now, hope you all liked this and thank you for being so patient

Take care all

Why is there such a stigma to locos from other nations. To be quite frank the only taboo that I can see in these scenarios are loading gauge issues. I quite like engines from the UK, Europe, Japan, Russia and everywhere else.

Poor Tink just wants to run like any other steam locomotive. To live properly again and be of use. Yet because she isn't British she is looked at like a eye sore. The only thing I would change about any German or Danish loco is I'd love to see them in some other color. Keep their Smokebox painted like it is with the the red and white ring on her funnel and maybe paint her in Caladonian blue or Highland yellow. Maybe even a deep crimson and adorable times twenty. But just because I would like to see them in more colors doesn't mean I don't like her class as is she is a tough little engine with a punch of challenger when needed. Plus she's a steam engine. What is the deal?

Isn't that what a heritage railway is about? Saving engines that are on the brink of scrap? Call yourself a steam lover after you accept all types of engines.

Sorry for the rant Joe. I still don't get why all the hate at NVR for Tink. She's adorable and probably much stronger than anyother tank on the line.

By the way think you could link me that web page about Danish engines again. I think I lost it in the move to my new Pc.

Well I appreciate your enthusiasm, you've kind of missed the whole point of Tinkerbell's charactar. She's one of the few engines that was actually a common shunter, you know, the common shunters that did their work, their work is all they know until they're scrapped, only speaking when spoken to, taking orders and doing it to the T and no matter how many times she's told it, she can't wrap her smokebox around why she's been preserved. Or more  to the point, she can't come to terms as to why she was left to rust for 30 years, being verbally abused to the point where she even believed the lies herself, if one hears a lie enough times, they'll start to believe it's true. And she can't understand if there really WAS a need for her, why had she been left? Why had she been scorned and left forlorn all those years? That and her lack there of ability to talk to anyone outside her own smokebox doesn't get her any answers, so those thoughts are left to fester. As for the ring across her funnel, she's a Danish engine, that's a Danish Flag. So it'd be natural for any danish engines to adorn that upon their funnels.

It's a weird concept in Britain. Even now with this brexit milarkee going on, anything that's not british seems to be outted because it isn't national. While there are many many people who love to see something different on the line, like many things, from something like British/continental pride to pacifism/ religious extremism. It's always the negative side that is always louder, as the positive side wishes to remain peaceful or to do good.

I see. Yes yes that does make more sense. Tank engines shunters or not were quite common. Shunters here in the US were often small tender engines that handled the job but were no bigger than Tink (relative to loading gauge of course.) but tank engines were common still. Tink is quite a mirror to Thomas as he did his work as a station pilot but he fussed about it and wanted more. Tink did what she was told to do and whent about it without question.

No I think I grasp her feelings better now you've explained it. In Denmark she would have some friend at least that she could talk to. But in the UK she had to learn a new language and her design wasn't what most crews were used to so any problems they faced from even the most trivial thing was blamed on Tink and most likely it was along the lines of "Rubbish system! Who had the idea to make every thing like that?!" (Firebox door, regulator and many other things) Indeed a sweetheart like Tink is going to tbink it's truly her fault after hearing any complaints enough. She is a small engine and while her heart is big no one can take abuse like that for long without breaking down.

I know from personal experience in my high school years. I had friends who cared about me. Gave me every bit of encouragement they could but there were teachers who got some kind of pleasure out of picking on me. One in particular had it out for me and had all but 4 of my teachers around his finger so he sure no matter what I never got anywhere and they blamed me for the lack of progress. I got very sick towards the end of it. Even now I still have some trouble they gave me a nervous stomach and other problems.

Also as you say "Tink is not national pride" for the UK because she isn't a british built tank. I bet the USA class would of suffered the same torment if they hadn't actually helped out during war time and garnering more respect. There is too muck of this kind of thing around. But to ke Tink is a
Plucky little engine but being that isn't enough some times.

I thought was what her funnel was wearing indeed you can tell it's far from. Thar national pridr is stupid though because if you look at at her she is very britosh. Stephenson parts are over heThanks my friend. by the way if you have time around Dec think you could work with me on designing a locomotive for a project I'm doing. No that don't mean I want you to draw it out I just need advice from a railway man on certain aspects of build and you know alot more on engines than I do.

Well, common shunters then, contrary to popular belief even the biggest tender engines, right up to the ten coupled variety have been relegated to shunting work. Look at Bosnia, one of the last places where you can find steam at work in Europe, using massive 2-10-0s as shunting engines.

Fun fact, Tink and Thomas share a lot more in common than they realize, both are small plucky tank engines that were the main shunters of their company, both were shunters turned station pilots and both engines (or in Thomas' case) became branchline engines, both have the ability to take short goods trains over a fair distance, as it turns out the F's were the most numerous class of steam locomotive in denmark.

Nah, not even that. When common shunters keep to themselves, they truly keep to themselves. Honestly, there's not a lot of problems with Tink that aren't universal with most small tank engines. The only problem I see is the firehole door, as it's too small to even get in and make repairs to the firebox. As a result, there's a hatch on her ashpan that you have to climb up into in order to get into the firebox to do repairs. Not really fun if some cheeky fitter decides to close the hatch behind you and leave you in there...! Well to be honest, Tink came from Denmark as a strategic reserve engine. You know, the secret program to keep a fleet of steam locomotives in the even of nuclear fallout. Where if a Nuclear bomb did go off in orbit, the electrics on diesels and electrics would be utterly buggered. So in that way, with steam having no electrical parts needed to operate, in theory, if war did break out, your trains would be the first to carry on moving. However, this reserve later proved to be unviable. So European countries either set their steamers back to work, or scrapped them. In most of europe's case, they would've scrapped them. Seeing as how most if not all the reserve were engines that were given slight overhauls before being stored away, they were essentially working engines. But with scrap prices being so low at the time, if you went to europe, in contrast with britain at the time, for the same price as a barry scrapyard wreck, which would take 30+ years to get back on it's wheels, in sweden, denmark, germany, poland ect. You could get a working engine, along with a full set of coaches. Hence the reason for NVR existing. But in there lied a problem not all the overhauls were done as well as you'd like to imagine... Materials were sparce, so if something that should've been made from copper and the copper wasn't avaliable... it was either made from brass or bronze. And in Tink's case... instead of a stay in her firebox... they put a rivet in her instead...

So yeah, if you're a common shunter that's kept to yourself all your working life, (mostly due to the fact that Denmark was one of the countries that was rekt by the germans in the war, then rekt even more by the allies taking it back, so naturally things'd be tense...) taken out of service, instead of being cut up for scrap, you're given a botched and rushed overhaul, then stored away in a shed for a couple years without any explanation. Then someone buys you, takes you out of your country and drops you in a yard with engines from all around the world... Beggin' mah pardon if anxiety ain't a thing yet.

Still, the sad part of the USA tanks, the reason crews don't like them is due to the fact the engine's simply aren't built for 25mph passenger trains, from personal experiance, I can see where they come from when they say they are rough riding at speed, not surprising as they are essentially downsized S160s with fewer wheels... Ontop of that the free-steaming nature of the engine can make the cab ride be... incubatious at best... A blast furnace at worst. But at the same time, these engines were only meant/built to last for around 10 years if they were lucky, so roughness can be understood considering the time of its construction... It's essentially trying to get a demolition derby car to run a F1 race.

A'ight. Fire away.

Plokman6 In reply to MrJoj [2016-10-24 20:57:18 +0000 UTC]

Indeed even the largest engines have shunting capabilities. Tank engines were used a lot more often because they didn't need to turn around and their smaller size allowed them to fit into the average sidings. Engines in the US never had that stigma of "Tender engines don't shunt" seeing as we used smaller tender engines far more often for shunting/switching. Don't understand why we were so adveresed to Tank Engines (We used em but compared to the UK the Tender engine is the common one)

Too bad the E2 wasn't as common. Oddly from some things I've read Awdry's Thomas being a "J50" Before the "E2" was made the proper loco would have been a bit of a bad choice longer running. As shunters J50s were quite a good choice but their axles were prone to hot boxes over long distances. So it's a bit of a good thing Thomas became a E2. Plucky Tank Engines are quite interesting and it's amazing Tink's class were so versatile also aren't they quite strong for their size sort of like the Terriers.

Indeed Tink isn't badly designed at all. She just had the same problems any other tank loco would. Side tanks getting in the way when you try to clean or need to oil a certain joint. The firebox problem doesn't sound so horrible with the hatch but I can indeed see jokers locking someone inside just quite silly but nothing horrible.

Oh right the reserve plan I've heard about how that went wrong. So they gave her a rush job overhaul and then send her to the scrap heap that is a terrible thing to do to a engine. No wonder she has such a introverted mindset. It truly is a wonder she didn't go insane from these kind of stresses. She didn't know whether she was coming or going. It was such a schizophrenic way for her to survive and then she is also met with that patriotism that made her get set in the back of a shed once a local engine was ready to take her place as the main runner of the line. I can understand why you've gotten attached to her she really has a long way to go and someone needs to help her out.

Well the fact that they were as you say made to last for far less time than other engines of their size along with their being built to run supply trains and goods they never really had to ride smoothly from the start. I imagine that any engine can be horrendous on a hot day but these locos sound a bit like they were built with a steel smelter for a Firebox. The comparison of Demo and F1 racers is a perfect one.

I'll right you in a Note my friend. No sense making the comments on this page into a thesis paper am I right? Thanks my friend.

All the same, you've captured a strong image here. Don't give it up, regardless what happens.
