The MSR was first operated in 1969 (no joke, a thorium based nuclear power source was created, the rest of this is sci-fi tho) but has not been remembered until 2060. in 2065 a fully functional micro was constructed, the problem was making one that was small, and autonomously functional as well as reliable. Since the micro-MSR wasn't very useful in small land craft it was still used in navy ships quite frequently, but still required a great amount of maintenance which was affordable for the time. However it wasn't until 2079 that the first autonamous micro MSR (AMMSR) was created for use in prototype mechs. the first AMMSR was still fairly large (around the size of a semi truck) and required super heavy mechs to make which explains the early mechs' super massive sizes.

Finally in 2084 even more progress in making a compact AMMSR was made (it was due to a new material called tungstite, which can withstand higher temperatures and retain required structural properties that the MSR required, in essence, tungstite allowed for a smaller AMMSR about the size of a small car which is the one displayed in the picture) and thus began the era of the standard articulation units (SAU era) which dominated the battlefield. The most notable difference of the standard articulation units was there size, usually about 5-10 meters tall.

2090 was the climax of the conflict which was during the SAU era. it is notable that very few people died compared to WWII conflicts because of the unconventional warfare, however overall destruction was tenfold of any major war since WWI in terms of cost and civilian property being destroyed.
