Yeah, mostly that. What happened was, the dark energy had bonded itself to sans' soul, basically fusing the two and creating a being with both attributes. While sans' feelings are suppressed by the dark energy that took him, there are still some that reside in his personal life that had taken over.
Feelings that tinge!sans can feel
- Annoyance
- Secretly afraid
the rest of the feelings he had lost, but again can gain from some known experience...
"If you hurt everyone, no one would hurt you..." - tinge!sans
"If you don't trust anyone, there wont be any fear of being betrayedβ¦" - tinge!sans
"Take it from me kid, it's better not to get personal with anyone, so as when they leave, you wont feel sorry for haven't spent time with them..." - tinge!sans
The dark energy is only doing so much, but is influencing some emotions of sans. Ya see, the dark energy has a weakness to light, hope too. Tinge!sans once had hope, but when the dark energy took over, it got rid of it, and suppressed the feelings associated with it too. Tinge!sans is, indeed, trying to hide his sadness, to hide his fear from socializing. It indeed is sad, for without the dark energy, he would not be alive then. So, he is best left reading a book and treated from a distance... but those who venture with hope to free him, may indeed help the dark energy to become good, and may one day free tinge!sans from his unbroken chains of fear. Undertinge is about freeing monsters from themselves, it's more based around freeing those who need freed, and we can say, tinge!sans is one of those that needs being freed. I just wish more peeps knew about this- after all, what's an au without the meaning to be so morally correct?

I think it really is important to understand, especially in the case of UnderTinge (and big part of why I like your AU so much). There's this strong undercurrent of morality and the effect hope and positivity has on others (and what the lack of it can do to them). I really and truly hope that there's a light at the end of the tunnel for everyone in the UnderTinge underground (as well as any others out there that might be suffering something similar).
