Contest Time!
Dear deviants,
projecteducate is launching a brand new contest for the month of August. The theme of this contest is tutorials.
Why tutorials?
A big part of our mission here at projecteducate is to help educate the DA community both with regards to art mediums and DeviantArt in general. Many of you have written incredible tutorials for us in the past. Tutorials are how most of us learn more about art nowadays. Tutorials help us improve ourselves, make our lives easier by finding shortcuts or little tricks, they help us refine our art and become the best artists we can be. Here on DeviantArt we also have an amazing Stock and Resources gallery, of which one of the sub-galleries is tutorials. Our stock CVs, Cassy-Blue and mercurycode do a fabulous job of highlighting some of the incredible tutorials available to you onsite. It truly is an art to create such resources for fellow artists! A very essential art.
What kind of tutorial?
Your tutorial should be related to an art medium. For this specific contest we will not accept tutorials related to DeviantArt. We really want to hone in on your artistic abilities and knowledge here and help the community of artists here on DA learn more about the variety of art mediums they might be interested in. We also want you to try and focus on topics that have not necessarily been prominently discussed before. For example, in the world of photography there are already tons of tutorials on topics such as how to use selective coloring or how to change someone's hair color or lipstick or how to make a background blurred, etc. However, there aren't as many tutorials on how to save an image for the web to avoid reduced quality upon upload, or how to airbrush skin without losing too much texture, or how to match skin-tones. So try to think outside the box, take a look around DA or the internet in general, see what tutorials you can find, and think of what you feel is lacking. Maybe you have a specific style, or you have learned something really cool. What is unique about you and what you do? Think about it, and then try to teach us!
How do I make a tutorial?
There are many ways to make a tutorial. Our CV Cassy-Blue took the time to put together a guide for you all with some tips, please do read it: Tutorial Tips. Seriously, READ IT.
Here are some great tutorial examples for you to use as inspiration for your own!
As you may have noticed there aren't many tutorials listed here that were made via journal on DA. You are allowed to submit tutorials you wrote via journal here onsite, but we would recommend going through the same process as the tutorials included above, as it makes for a cleaner and clearer result that is easier to read and more appealing to the eye.
Rules:
- Your tutorial must be newly created for the purpose of this contest, we will check the submission of your deviation.
- Your tutorial must be related to an art medium, as mentioned above, therefore no tutorials on how to use DA will be allowed.
- Your tutorial should be of your own creation, do not simply copy-paste or regurgitate the information you found in someone else's tutorial. Only create a tutorial based on your own knowledge and expertise.
- Your tutorial must be educational, helpful, readable, understandable. It must either be in English, OR in another language with a complete English translation included, in both cases the English must be grammatically correct, so you might want to have an English speaker proofread it.
- Your tutorial should be submitted to the Resources & Stock Images > Tutorials gallery here on DA, categorized within the appropriate art medium covered by your tutorial. If you need help, please leave a comment on this journal and you will be advised on how to submit your tutorial.
- Please include a link to your tutorial in the comment section of this journal, as your entry to this contest.
Deadline:
You have until September 1st at 11:59PST (Pacific Time) to enter this contest.
Prizes:
1st place: 6 months core + 1,000 points
2nd place: 3 month core + 500 points
3rd place: 1 month core + 200 points
Good luck to you all!

Ah. I see. I wonder what part of it is complicated? I included a video tutorial, in the event that it's better for people to learn the approach visually.

Oh it might not be complicated for people who are more familiar with the program! But I don't know the program (or any similar program for that matter), and any form of coding gives me an instant headache . So I'm not exactly the best person to ask. On top of that I'm definitely one of those people who learns visually, so for me a tutorial without any pretty pictures instantly scares me, haha. If I knew the program the video tutorial would probably be very helpful ^^

Ah, ok. That is why I included the video Tutorial, as I know that a lot of people learn visually, and I wanted to accommodate as many learning styles as possible, as I know that if I find something interesting that I want to learn, I try to get it in the format that will help me the most.
In any case, if you know someone who is getting into Source Filmmaker, and is attempting to import a 3D Model, my Tutorial should be able to help out, for sure. All in all, I do hope the best of luck for you guys, eh!

Hi. I've just submitted my Tutorial to the Gallery.
Source Filmmaker Custom Model TutorialDisclaimer: This Tutorial is for Educational Purposes ONLY. Please credit any copyright holder if you use brand-specific names, and/or logos. Thank you.
Hi, and welcome to my Source Filmmaker Tutorial, which will be about importing new models in Source Filmmaker. Before we get started, I have a little list of what is required for a successful import:
A 3D Model with its textures in image format. (This is what we will be working with. I’ll leave the choice up to you for what it’ll be, as whichever 3D model will work, as long as it can be imported into Blender. Also, it’s the same principle for all models.).
Blender + Blender Source Tools (This will be our primarily used software program for this Tutorial. Blender Source Tools is used to properly communicate with the compiler, so no external compiler software is needed.)
VTFEdit (This will be used to let the compiler know which Materials will be compiled with the Model.). If you don’t have it, a quick Google searc
I believe this Tutorial is quite useful for anyone who wants to have a custom model imported into Source Filmmaker, so they can make their desired renders. And, I am very grateful for the contest, as, without it, I wouldn't have expanded my own knowledge of the process. I honestly thought that I could only use one Skin on a model. Yet, after some experimentation, I am happy to know that I was wrong with that theory, and, that is why I included the advanced segment of having multiple Skins.
Here's a link to the Video Tutorial, in case you only need the video to follow along. It is in my Sta.sh.
In the ZIP file for the resources, there's quite a few files, so, I figured I'd explain a bit about them.
134.zip: This is the archive for the IPhone 3D Model.
blender_source_tools_2.6.2.zip: This is the archive for Blender Source Tools. It is very simple to install Blender Source Tools, which helps tremendously while going through this Tutorial.
VTFEdit.zip: This is the archive for the VTFEdit program.
How to import a custom 3D Model into Source Filmmaker.mp4: The video version of this Tutorial. Feel free to watch it, in the event that I haven't been too clear in some areas of the Tutorial. I understand that different people learn differently, and I decided to make this video to accomodate those who learn visually.
VMT (Valve Material Type) Files: These are to communicate with the compiler what the Textures for the model are.
VTF (Valve Texture Format): These are the textures that will be associated with the model.
Image files (PNG): For those who want to follow the VTFEdit portion of the Tutorial.
Custom Skin.PSD: If you want to customize the text in the Custom Skin, you can open this in either Photoshop or GIMP, and, once saved, you just need to save it as a PNG. Afterwards, it's just a simple matter of going through the VTFEdit portion to save the VTF file.
Thanks for this amazing opportunity, and I hope to hear from you guys about it. If there's any questions, feel free to ask me about anything. Thanks.

Hi! I'd like to nominate my last tutorial, It is a bit weird because it applies and it doesn't at the same time.
It's a video tutorial I split in several parts. The first part is showcase the best tutorials other people made across the web (Mainly DA though) with links to all of them. Then I do my own tutorial talking about things that the other tutorials don't cover. So the video has an original tutorial and at the same time a showcase for the web's best tutorials. I hope it qualifies! I like to help other people get better and get better myself when doing it!
Thanks!
Javi.

I have just a couple of questions about the type of Tutorial that I am planning on entering the contest with.
1) Is a Tutorial on Source Filmmaker acceptable? (Source Filmmaker is a 3D animation tool, and it can be used to render posters, and compile movies.).
2) If I can do it on Source Filmmaker, can the topic be on how to import a custom 3D Model? If a disclaimer that the information is for educational purposes only, I will include it. If the proposed topic is not acceptable, is it ok if the topic is on the basics of posing the character models?
Thanks in advance, and I hope to be able to participate.

All of that is fine as we have no restrictions on the content of the tutorial other than it shouldnt be a tutorial to explain something about DA

Roger that. I'll just put in a disclosure, then, I guess, just so people know that the Tutorial is for educational purposes, only, and that it isn't meant to infringe anything. For the Tutorial, it will be a very simple model that will be imported, and I might include an optional section for a slightly advanced skillset. It'll make sense, once I submit it.
And, I apologize, if I seemed dramatic.

Sounds like a great way to get involved with the Community!
I'm willing to participate, for sure! I just hope that there isn't any bias or anything like that, in the event that I do try to submit a Tutorial for this awesome contest. The last thing I would want would be to put heart and soul into a beautiful Tutorial, and my being turned down due to personal bias against me, as that is a big concern for me, at the moment. I want to do what I can for the DeviantART Community, and the Community Relations Team. And, lately, I find that I have been doubting myself, due to fears of bias against me. I only mean well, and I hope to be able to show that, sometime. I hope that this Comment isn't taken the wrong way, as I truly believe that I can achieve my goals in good time and in good faith. On the same token, I also am attempting to address a concern for on my end, as politely as possible, so that misconceptions and miscommunications about me can be cleared up, so I can try my best with little to no fear of failure. This message is definitely not meant to be rude, or anything negative to anyone. I'm just pointing out that I have been meaning to participate, yet, I haven't, due to fears that there may be some bias that I might be able to clear up.
