Description
Oscar is based on the original New Zealand Government Railways (NZGR) DM Class. These red 3'6" (1,067mm) narrow gauge 1500V DC electric multiple units (EMU) were built in 1937 by English Electric Company Limited in the Lancashire city of Preston in England, and mainly used on Wellington's electrified routes on New Zealand's national rail network, when the Tawa Flat Deviation opened in 1939. Some of the EMU's were replaced by Ganz-Mavag EM Class units in 1978, when the traffic monitoring system (TMS) was introduced.
