While, I personally don't find The Principal and the Pauper as bad as some make it out to be, it still has its issues. So here is how I would rewrite it:

Instead of it being revealed that Skinner is an imposter, the "real" Seymour Skinner turns out to be an old rival of Skinner's from Vietnam, whose name can be Armin. During Skinner's anniversary celebration, Skinner's rival arrives and accuses him of stealing his dream, which was to be an elementary school principal. During their time in Vietnam, the two eventually put their rivalry aside. The "real" Skinner's fate (being presumed dead) can remain as it was in the actual version.

Afterwards, Skinner decides to make Armin his vice principal. However, Skinner finds that Armin is too stern with the children, and starts to have second thoughts about his decision. Armin finds out that being a principal is not what he thought it would be, and decides to leave Springfield.
