Description
This painting is available as a limited edition series of prints from my store.I painted something that doesn't have scales! Go me.
Seem to be on a bit of a roll lately. This one was my husband's fault inspiration again; he mentioned something about gargoyles, and it occurred to me that it's been AGES since I drew anything gargoyle-related.
So these lovely fellows came about, guardians at the entrance to a mage's castle. And I don't think visitors in the dead of night are much welcome...
Digital painting done in Photoshop.

Thank you very much! Rocky texturing is some of my favorite to do.

Aw, neat! How did you make that killer rock texture? Was it all by painting or did you use additional textures or specific brushes?

There's one brush I mostly work with that gives a rougher texture than a standard hard round brush. Sometimes I'll do a texture overlay (typically using textures from cgtextures.com, because they're awesome!), but I didn't do that on this one.

I usually use the "slap on a rock texture" method (agreed, cgtextures is the best, i've probably used about 50 of their textures), but that brush-work looks so much better!

I enjoy your step-by-step, but without any comments about techniques, it's not very helpful. Sorry to say.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but the progress images aren't really meant to be a tutorial, more a snapshot of how I completed the work. I do intend to do a painting tutorial at some point, but they take quite a bit longer to put together than the painting itself!

First off, I did not mean to be critical.
I agree with you that making tutorials is very time-consuming (and boring!), but perhaps some mental notes for each step that you completed would be helpful. That's what I've done for my paintings. In the end, I have some kind of artist's journal to show the viewers along with my step-by-step. Of course, it's just me.

Gargoyles, been ages since I have seen or head mention of that 90s kids series, even id this is not meant to be from there at all. Now these creatures may be of the living stone kind, and usually found on castles and churches, but I do still see the dragon influence in their faces, and wing design. Also like the detail and way you built this castle as it loos like Night Castle to me, even down to the moon, and in that I do think it is very well done image.

This isn't meant to be from the TV show Gargoyles, though I love that show and used to watch it all the time. I love the look of real gargoyles on old buildings. Really, they were just fancy drain covers... though the idea of using a creepy-looking carving to ward off evil is just very interesting.

It was all believed in a time when magic and faith alone ruled the lands, so why not, this the reason for being put on churches. Wish I watch that TV series more when I was a kid, never did all that much, short minded parents all that.

Very pretty! I love the lighting especially. Reminds me of your old Halloween page back when you had adoptables. Boy that was a long time ago.

Hehe... ...I kinda feel old now. Actually, it's fun to look back at the kind of work I was doing then. I like to think I've improved a bit!

Indeed you have! And if you were old, I guess it means I was old, too, given that I can remember browsing the site when it was still up...

We can feel old together! Well, if you're only as old as you feel, then perhaps we can feel young together instead. I did find a site a few weeks ago that still had several of my adoptables up. That was... very strange to see! The Internet never forgets...

This is incredibly impressive! You've done such an amazing job with painting this scene. At first glance
in thumbnail view, I thought it was something made in 3D. Terrific job!
Uploading the process really adds a wonderful insight into how you made this piece. Thanks for sharing
it.

Thank you very much! I'm always intrigued to see the process other artists go through on their work, so I'm glad to hear that sharing my own process is interesting to see as well.

I have a thing about clouds, so I'll jump at any excuse to add them to a painting.
