Now, I know a lot of you have seen "Mystery Science Theater 3000", but have you ever seen it like this?

Back in 1988, Jim Mallon and Joel Hodgson collaborated to make the first incarnation of MST3K for a rinky-dink UHF station in Minneapolis, Minnesota called KTMA. The premise was there, but the budget was even lower than it would be when the show went to cable. Hodgson literally built the robots out of stuff from a Goodwill store the night before they filmed the pilot, and the crew pilfered their movies from KTMA's library without securing the rights first. All the riffs were improvised on the spot, and the inflexible shooting schedule resulted in a few episodes being taped without such key cast members as Trace Beaulieu, Josh Elvis Weinstein, and even Joel himself on one occasion.

Primitive? You bet, but it was good enough for the Comedy Channel (aka Comedy Central) to buy it in 1989. The rest, as they say, is history.
